Tel Aviv, March 17, 2026: The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the killing of Gholamreza Soleimani, a senior Iranian military leader, during a targeted operation inside Iran.
IDF Targets Senior Iranian Military Leader
According to the IDF, forces carried out a precision strike that eliminated Soleimani, who led Iran’s Basij paramilitary unit for the past six years.
Moreover, reports indicate that his deputy, Seyyed Karishi, also died in the operation. The strike reportedly hit a temporary location used to avoid detection.
“The IDF targeted and eliminated Gholamreza Soleimani… who led repression operations using violence and arrests against civilians,” the IDF stated.
Role of Basij Unit in Iran
The Basij unit operates under Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. It plays a key role in internal security and crowd control.
According to Israeli officials, the unit carried out:
- Crackdowns on civilian protests
- Mass arrests

Eyal Zamir confirmed ongoing strikes against multiple targets.

In addition, reports suggest that Israel targeted Ali Larijani, a senior Iranian political figure and key power broker.
However, officials have not confirmed whether Larijani survived the attack.
