New Delhi [India], February 4 :
Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The issue came up after she met families affected by the SIR exercise. The meeting was held at Banga Bhawan in New Delhi.
According to the Chief Minister, officials wrongly removed names from the voter list. Several living citizens were declared dead during the process.
Mamata Banerjee Calls SIR “Deeply Flawed”
Sharing her concerns on X, Banerjee described the SIR exercise as deeply flawed.
Heartbreaking stories emerged during her interaction with affected families. Many voters lost their democratic rights, she said.
At Banga Bhawan, senior citizens and migrant workers narrated their experiences. Daily wage earners also raised serious concerns.
The Chief Minister said the process disrupted lives and created chaos across communities.
Concerns Over Authority and Procedure
Strong objections were raised over the deployment of micro-observers in West Bengal.
Banerjee called the move unprecedented and unlawful. She said authorities deployed observers without legal backing.
According to her, the action violated the Representation of the People Act.
Officials allegedly rewrote rules during the process. She also accused them of misusing technology.
BJP Accused of Undermining Democracy
Banerjee accused the BJP of misusing constitutional institutions.
She said the party failed to gain the trust of the people.
Choosing institutional control over democratic methods has weakened democracy, she claimed.
Despite the challenges, she reaffirmed her commitment to protect voting rights and defend the Constitution.
Meeting With Election Commission
Earlier, Banerjee met officials of the Election Commission of India in New Delhi.
Along with her were Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar addressed the delegation’s concerns.
Later, Banerjee alleged that officials humiliated her during the meeting.
ECI sources rejected the allegation. They said the Commission explained that the rule of law would prevail.
Supreme Court Steps In
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India issued directions related to the SIR process in Tamil Nadu.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant ordered the publication of voter names listed under logical discrepancies.
Authorities must display the lists publicly. Affected voters can submit documents within ten days.
District collectors were instructed to deploy adequate staff to ensure smooth implementation.
