Chamoli, March 16: Heavy snowfall has been reported in the high-altitude areas of Chamoli district since Sunday night. The snowfall has covered the holy shrine of Badrinath Dham in a thick blanket of snow.
The temple premises and surrounding mountains, including Neelkanth Parvat and Narayan Parvat, are fully covered in fresh snow. The region has also recorded a sharp drop in temperature.
Despite North India preparing for the summer season, the weather in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand has turned extremely cold again.
Severe Cold Conditions Return to Badrinath
The heavy snowfall has brought back intense winter conditions in Badrinath and nearby lower-altitude areas. Local authorities reported a sudden fall in temperatures following the snowfall.
The scenic town of Badrinath, located in the Himalayas, often experiences heavy snowfall during winter months. However, such snowfall during the transition toward spring has surprised many residents.
Kedarnath Also Witnessed Extreme Winter Earlier
Earlier this year, Kedarnath Temple experienced severe winter weather. The temple town was buried under 3 to 4 feet of snow, and temperatures dropped to around -16°C.
The snow covered the entire shrine area and surrounding mountains in the high Himalayan region.
Security Forces Continue Patrolling in Harsh Weather
Despite the extreme cold and icy winds, personnel from the Indo‑Tibetan Border Police and local police continued security patrols around Kedarnath temple and nearby sensitive locations.
Officials from the Rudraprayag district administration said security arrangements remain strong even in harsh weather conditions.
Security forces have maintained regular monitoring around the temple premises to ensure safety in the region.
Kedarnath Temple to Reopen on April 22
Authorities also confirmed that the gates of Kedarnath Dham will reopen for devotees on April 22, 2026, at 8:00 AM.
The opening date was announced during the festival of Mahashivratri at the Shri Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, based on traditional Panchang calculations.
Several dignitaries attended the announcement ceremony, including temple authorities and members of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC).
