Kalaburagi (Karnataka), February 9:
Karnataka Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Sunday attacked the BJP for politicising the Bengaluru Metro fare hike issue. He said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has already written to the Centre and asked it to stop the fare increase.
Rao said both the State and Central Governments jointly run Namma Metro. He added that the Centre must also take responsibility.
“BJP leaders want to make politics out of everything. The CM has already written to the Government of India. If Tejasvi Surya says they will not increase fares, then they should issue an official order,” Rao said.
CM Change Decision Lies With Congress High Command
Rao also reacted to speculation about a Karnataka CM change. He said the Congress high command will take the final decision.
“The party high command will decide. Whatever Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi decide will be final,” he said.
Tejasvi Surya Blames Congress Over Metro Fare Hike
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya blamed the Congress government for the issue. He said state officials asked for the fare hike because Karnataka is facing financial pressure.
Surya claimed that in 2025, officials initiated a 105 per cent fare hike. He said the latest revision would have increased fares by 5 per cent. He also demanded a proper fare rationalisation process.
BMRCL Puts Fare Hike on Hold
Earlier on Sunday, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced that it has kept the proposed fare hike on hold.
BMRCL said it will take a final decision after the board reviews the matter.
About Namma Metro
BMRCL is a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka. It operates Bengaluru’s metro rail network.
Currently, Bengaluru has over 97 km of metro rail in operation. The city also plans a third metro line in the future.
