Dehradun (Uttarakhand), December 31:
Dehradun Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the murder of 24-year-old MBA student Anjel Chakma, officials said on Tuesday.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh constituted the SIT and appointed SP (Rural) Pankaj Gairola as its head. The team has begun the investigation and collected CCTV footage from the crime scene.
Meanwhile, the Police Headquarters announced a ₹1 lakh reward for information leading to the arrest of the main absconding accused, Yagya Raj Awasthi. Police teams are conducting raids to trace him.
Anjel Chakma, a student from Tripura, suffered a brutal attack on December 9 in Dehradun. A group of assailants attacked her with knives and blunt objects. She later died during treatment at a hospital.
Earlier, SSP Ajay Singh confirmed that five accused have been arrested in the case. However, one accused remains on the run. According to police, the sixth accused is of Nepali origin and fled the city a day after the incident.
Police added additional legal sections, including attempt to murder, after reviewing witness statements and evidence. Investigators have also recorded statements from the victim’s family members.
SSP Singh said that Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has been briefed on the case. He assured strict action against all those involved.
Meanwhile, members of the National Student Union of India (NSUI) held a candle march in New Delhi to demand justice for Anjel Chakma.
Police officials said the SIT will ensure a fast and transparent investigation. Further developments are awaited.
