New Delhi, December 30 :
Dense fog disrupted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday. Poor visibility affected both arrivals and departures across the day.
Airport officials confirmed that around 60 incoming flights and 58 departing flights were cancelled. In addition, 16 flights heading to Delhi were diverted to nearby cities due to unsafe landing conditions.
Fog Hits Flight Operations
Heavy fog reduced visibility to very low levels during early morning hours. As a result, airlines faced difficulties in take-off and landing operations. Several flights experienced delays before cancellations were announced.
AAI Issues Passenger Advisory
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued an advisory for passengers travelling in Northern India. It warned of possible delays and disruptions due to fog.
AAI asked passengers to stay in touch with airlines for real-time updates. Travellers were also advised to reach airports early to avoid inconvenience during check-in.
Civil Aviation Ministry Steps In
The Ministry of Civil Aviation directed airlines to strictly follow passenger facilitation norms. Airlines must provide timely flight updates to passengers.
They were also instructed to offer meals to delayed passengers. Rebooking or refunds must be provided in case of cancellations. Airlines were told not to deny boarding after timely check-in.
Visibility Drops Across Delhi
Several parts of Delhi witnessed near-zero visibility. Affected areas included the Dwarka Expressway, Dhaula Kuan, and the airport region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for dense fog. It warned residents about difficult travel conditions over the next few days.
Air Quality Remains Very Poor
Delhi’s air quality stayed in the very poor category on Tuesday. The city recorded an AQI of 384. Authorities advised residents to limit outdoor activities.
Officials continue to monitor weather conditions closely as fog persists across Northern India.
