New Delhi | January 22, 2026 :
Ahead of the Republic Day 2026 celebrations, Delhi Police will deploy AI-enabled smart glasses and advanced Facial Recognition Systems (FRS) to strengthen security and surveillance across the national capital.
The move marks a major technological upgrade in crowd monitoring and threat detection during one of India’s most high-security national events.
AI Smart Glasses to Debut at Republic Day Parade
Additional Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahala said the force is using technology-driven solutions to enhance public safety.
Selected police personnel will wear AI-powered smart glasses along the Republic Day parade route. The glasses will help officers monitor crowds in real time and identify potential threats instantly.
“This is the first time Delhi Police will use such wearable technology during Republic Day,” Mahala said.
Advanced Facial Recognition to Identify Disguised Suspects
According to officials, all CCTV cameras will be integrated with video analytics and FRS technology. The system can identify wanted individuals even if they attempt to disguise their appearance.
The technology can detect faces despite:
- Masks or caps
- Makeup or facial hair
- Changes in hairstyle
- Old or low-quality photographs
Mahala said the system has been trained using multiple algorithms to ensure high accuracy.
Data Security a Top Priority
Delhi Police emphasised that data privacy and security remain critical. The smart glasses and FRS cameras will operate on standalone systems with no internet connection.
Each device carries an encrypted local database, stored securely on mobile devices connected to the smart glasses. This setup prevents external access and ensures controlled usage.
Database of 65,000 Criminals Linked to Devices
Officials said the smart glasses connect to a database containing details of around 65,000 known criminals. The system scans faces instantly and alerts officers if it finds a match.
The glasses also feature thermal scanning technology, which can help detect concealed weapons or suspicious objects in crowded areas.
Massive Security Deployment Across New Delhi
Along with AI surveillance, police have planned extensive physical security arrangements:
- Around 10,000 police personnel deployed in New Delhi district
- Over 3,000 CCTV cameras installed
- More than 30 control rooms operational
- Three-layer security checks for pedestrians
- Strict vehicle screening protocols
Authorities said these measures aim to ensure a safe and incident-free Republic Day parade.
