Funeral Procession Held Under Tight Security
Dhaka (Bangladesh), December 20:
Activists of Inqilab Moncho gathered in Dhaka on Saturday to take part in the funeral procession of their slain leader, Sharif Osman bin Hadi. Authorities deployed heavy security across several areas of the capital to prevent unrest.
The funeral prayer will take place at Manik Mia Avenue, south of the national Parliament Building. It is scheduled for 2 pm local time. Police restricted movement in nearby areas as a precautionary measure.
Leader Shot in Dhaka, Died in Singapore
Sharif Osman bin Hadi served as the convenor of Inqilab Moncho. Assailants shot him at close range on December 12 while he was travelling in a rickshaw in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area.
Doctors later flew him to Singapore by air ambulance on December 15 for advanced treatment. He succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
Protests Erupt After Death
After news of Hadi’s death spread, protests broke out across Dhaka. Supporters demanded justice and staged multiple demonstrations. The unrest intensified after authorities brought his body back to the capital on Friday.
Inqilab Moncho leaders appealed to their supporters to maintain peace during the funeral. Despite this, tension remains high in the city.
Civil Groups Demand Action on Law and Order
Several citizen organisations criticised the interim government over the deteriorating security situation. They demanded the resignation of the home adviser, citing failure to maintain law and order after the killing.
In a joint statement, 16 organisations expressed serious concern over public safety. They urged the authorities to take immediate steps to restore stability. The groups include Ganatantrik Odhikar Committee, Network for Democratic Bangladesh, Naripokkho, Nagarik Coalition, and others.
The statement said the government has failed to protect citizens even one year after the July Uprising.
Media Bodies Condemn Attacks on Newspapers
Bangladesh’s Editors’ Council and the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh condemned recent attacks on media houses. They criticised vandalism and arson at the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. The bodies called the incidents a direct threat to press freedom.
BNP Calls Violence a Conspiracy Ahead of Polls
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party linked the violence to a political conspiracy. The party claimed that certain groups want to create instability ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for February next year.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir condemned the incidents at a press conference. He warned that organised forces are pushing the country towards chaos.
As the funeral procession continues, the interim government faces growing pressure to maintain peace and ensure security in Dhaka.
