Former US President Donald Trump expressed confidence in the proposed Gaza Board of Peace during the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos. He described it as the “most prestigious board ever assembled.”
Speaking to reporters, Trump said the board could achieve more than the United Nations. He added that it would focus on action and results. The board is expected to be officially formed later this week.
Trump Criticises UN, Praises Board’s Efficiency
During his remarks, Trump took a swipe at the United Nations. He claimed the peace board would complete work the UN failed to deliver.
According to Trump, the board will include influential leaders. He said these individuals have the authority to make decisions and implement solutions quickly.
Putin Included Despite Security Concerns
Responding to questions about Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump defended his inclusion. He said the board needs people who “get the job done.”
Trump confirmed that Putin accepted the invitation. He added that nearly all invited leaders agreed to join the initiative.
Middle East Peace Linked to Iran Nuclear Issue
Trump linked progress in Middle East peace to neutralising Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He said peace would not have been possible otherwise.
The board initially focuses on Gaza and the wider Middle East. Over time, it may expand to mediate global conflicts.
Gaza Board of Peace: Purpose and Funding
The Gaza Board of Peace forms part of Phase 2 of a 20-point peace plan. The plan aims to stabilise West Asia and support post-conflict recovery.
According to the White House, the board will oversee governance, reconstruction, and investment. Countries committing USD 1 billion will receive permanent seats. Others may join for three-year terms.
Countries Accepting Trump’s Invitation
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said up to 25 countries accepted the invitation. These include Israel, UAE, Turkey, Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kosovo, and Belarus.
Trump Speaks on Greenland and Arctic Security
Trump also addressed questions about Greenland. He described the proposed deal as long-term and security-focused.
Later, he met NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Trump said a US presence in Greenland benefits NATO and Europe. He later posted that the framework for a future deal is ready.
