Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh | January 22, 2026:
Police have registered a fresh FIR in the Greater Noida pit accident case linked to the death of 27-year-old tech professional Yuvraj Mehta. The incident occurred in Sector-150, where Mehta’s car plunged into a water-filled pit near a public road.
The FIR was filed at Knowledge Park Police Station. Police invoked sections of the Environmental Protection Act, the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Authorities said the case points to serious negligence at the construction site.
Five Individuals Named in FIR
Police named Abhay Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, Manish Kumar, Achal Bohra, and Nirmal Kumar in the FIR. Officers booked them under:
- Section 15 of the Environmental Protection Act, 1986
- Sections 24 and 43 of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974
- Sections 290, 270, and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023
Officials said these sections apply due to environmental damage and risks to public safety.
Unsafe Pit Posed Serious Risk
During routine patrolling, police found a large pit filled with stagnant and polluted water. The pit had remained open for several years. Garbage accumulation caused a strong foul smell and health concerns for residents.
The pit lay close to a public road. Authorities found no barricades, warning boards, or safety measures at the site. Residents told police that strong winds carried the stench into nearby areas, making it difficult to breathe.
Land Ownership Under Scrutiny
Investigators found that Lotus Green Construction Private Limited purchased the land in 2014. The company later sold it to Viztown in 2020. Police said Lotus Green Construction still holds a significant stake in the property.
NDRF Recovery and CEO Arrest
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) recovered Yuvraj Mehta’s car from the flooded pit after heavy rain on the night of January 16–17.
Police arrested Abhay Singh, CEO of Viztown. They produced him before a local court, which granted one day of judicial custody. Authorities will present him again on Thursday.
SIT Formed, Report Due in Five Days
The administration formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident. SIT head Bhanu Bhaskar visited the site and met officials and family members.
“The investigation has begun. We will submit the report within five days,” Bhaskar said.
Political Response and Family Allegations
BJP MP Mahesh Sharma expressed condolences to the family. He said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath assured strict action against those responsible.
Mehta’s family alleged gross administrative negligence. They claimed he struggled for nearly two hours before drowning. They also said bystanders recorded videos instead of helping.
