Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), February 6 :
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with M/s Geotropy India Pvt. Ltd. to explore and harness the state’s geothermal energy potential.
The initiative aims to support the government’s vision of making Himachal Pradesh a Green Energy State.
Key Officials Present During MoU Signing
According to the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the event was attended by:
- Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi
- Ambassador of Iceland to India Benedikt Hoskuldsson
The MoU was signed by Chief Engineer D.P. Gupt (Directorate of Energy) on behalf of the state government. Tomos Otto Hansson, Chairperson of Iceland-based GEOTROPY ehf, signed on behalf of the company.
CM Sukhu: Geothermal Energy Is Clean and Available 24×7
CM Sukhu said the state government is committed to promoting sustainable and environment-friendly energy sources. He described geothermal energy as a clean alternative that can reduce dependence on conventional power sources.
He also highlighted that geothermal energy has a major advantage—it is available round the clock.
The Chief Minister directed the company to begin exploration immediately so that the state can harness the geothermal potential at the earliest.
No Financial Burden on State Government
The Chief Minister clarified that the exploration process will not create any financial burden for the Himachal Pradesh Government.
Senior officers from the Directorate of Energy were also present during the signing.
CM Sukhu Inaugurates Development Projects in Una
Earlier in the day, CM Sukhu dedicated two major development projects worth Rs 16.26 crore to the people of the Amb sub-division of Una district.
He inaugurated the upgraded Takarla-Baduhi road via Nei-Abadi, built at a cost of Rs 6.57 crore. The project covers nearly 5 km and will benefit more than 11,000 residents.
He also dedicated the Amb-Gagret-Harijan Basti road along with a bridge, completed at a cost of Rs 9.50 crore. This project will improve connectivity for the Shree Chintpurni and Gagret Assembly constituencies.
New Library and Gymnasium for Youth
The Chief Minister also inaugurated the Samarthya Gyandeep Library and Gymnasium at Maidi Khas. The facility was constructed at a cost of around Rs 20 lakh and will support the educational and physical development of youth.
