Male, Maldives – April 2: India secured a dominant 5-0 win over Bhutan in the SAFF U20 Championship semi-final at the National Stadium in Male, Maldives, on Wednesday. This victory set up a summit clash with Bangladesh, who defeated Nepal 1-0 in the other semi-final.
Rohen Singh Chaphamayum Stars with a Brace
Rohen Singh Chaphamayum was the standout player, scoring twice in the 56th and 57th minutes. Omang Dodum (4′), Md Arbash (44′), and substitute Malemngamba Thokchom (90+2′) also added goals, sealing the 5-0 rout.
Early Lead and Total Control
India took control early with a goal in the 4th minute. Bungson Singh Takhellambam sent a long pass to Rohen, who crossed to Omang Dodum. Dodum finished calmly at the near post for the lead.
India kept the pressure on, testing Bhutan’s defense. In the 6th minute, Vishal Yadav’s shot deflected just wide. Rohen and Dodum also forced Bhutan’s goalkeeper, Tandin Penjor, into action.
Strong First Half
In the 37th minute, Yaipharemba Chingakham crossed for Rishikanta Meitei Laishram, but his shot was blocked by Sonam Dorji. Bhutan had a chance in the 38th minute when Ngawang Yonten tried a lob after Rohen’s mistake, but it hit the crossbar.
India doubled their lead in the 44th minute. Dodum’s ball across goal found Md Arbash, who tapped in at the far post for a 2-0 advantage.
Rohen’s Quick Double
The second half began with more attacking play from India. In the 56th minute, a team move resulted in Rohen’s first goal. Dodum set up Arbash, who passed to Rohen for a powerful strike.
A minute later, Arbash intercepted a loose pass, advanced, and set up Rohen, who completed his brace.
Thokchom Seals the Win
India continued to dominate the match, limiting Bhutan’s attacks. In stoppage time, Malemngamba Thokchom finished off a low-angle shot to complete the 5-0 victory.
India vs Bangladesh in the Final
India will now face Bangladesh in the final on April 3 as they aim to defend their SAFF U20 Championship title.
