New Delhi, March 16: India has started direct diplomatic talks with Iran to ensure the safe passage of Indian tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar shared this update amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
In an interview with the Financial Times UK, Jaishankar said that dialogue with Tehran remains the most practical way to keep maritime traffic moving. The Strait of Hormuz handles nearly 20 percent of global oil trade, which makes it crucial for India’s energy security.
Jaishankar said India prefers coordination and discussion with Iran instead of disengagement. He also noted that the talks have already shown positive signs.
Indian Tankers Successfully Cross the Strait of Hormuz
Two Indian-flagged ships, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, recently crossed the Strait of Hormuz safely. These vessels carried about 92,712 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Both ships are now heading toward Indian ports such as Mundra and Kandla. Their safe passage highlights the early success of India’s diplomatic efforts with Iran.
Jaishankar explained that India has not yet secured a universal arrangement for all ships. Authorities currently review each vessel transit individually. Officials handle approvals case by case to ensure safe navigation.
Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Many energy-importing countries depend on this narrow waterway.
India imports a large portion of its crude oil from the Middle East. Any disruption in this route can increase global oil prices and affect energy supplies. Because of this, India continues to closely monitor developments in the region.
Regional Tensions Continue to Rise
These developments follow warnings from Donald Trump about possible additional strikes on Iran’s Kharg Island, a key oil export hub.
Trump also asked major global economies such as China, France, Japan, South Korea, and Britain to deploy naval forces to protect shipping routes.
Despite these tensions, India continues to focus on diplomacy rather than military involvement.
India Maintains Diplomatic Engagement
Jaishankar stated that India will continue its discussions with Iran to protect shipping routes and energy supplies. He added that India may share its experience with European partners.
However, he said that each country manages its relationship with Iran based on its own geopolitical situation.
Indian Oil Tanker Jag Laadki Departs with Crude
Meanwhile, the Indian-flagged tanker Jag Laadki recently departed from Fujairah carrying 80,800 metric tonnes of Murban crude oil. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed the vessel’s departure.
The tanker loaded crude at a facility that faced an attack earlier. Authorities monitored the situation closely before allowing the ship to leave.
