Mumbai, March 6: India defeated England by 7 runs in a thrilling semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. With this victory, India entered the tournament final for the second consecutive time.
The match turned into a spectacular run-scoring contest. Both teams played aggressive cricket and produced one of the highest-scoring games in T20 history. A total of 499 runs were scored in the match. This total ranks as the second-highest aggregate in Men’s T20 International cricket.
India Post Massive Total of 253
England won the toss and chose to bowl first. India took advantage of the batting conditions and built a huge total.
Sanju Samson led the charge with a brilliant 89 runs. He smashed eight fours and seven sixes during his innings. Samson controlled the game and kept the scoreboard moving quickly.
Meanwhile, other Indian batters also contributed important runs.
- Shivam Dube scored 43 runs off 25 balls
- Ishan Kishan added 39 runs off 18 balls
- Tilak Varma smashed 21 runs off 7 balls
- Hardik Pandya finished strongly with 27 runs off 12 balls
As a result, India posted 253 runs, the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup knockout match.
For England, Will Jacks and Adil Rashid took two wickets each. In addition, Jofra Archer dismissed Tilak Varma.
England Fight Hard but Fall Short
England started the chase with an attacking approach. The highlight of their innings came from Jacob Bethell.
Bethell played an outstanding knock and scored his first T20 International century. His powerful hitting kept England in the contest for most of the match.
However, the Indian bowlers held their nerves in the final overs. England eventually finished seven runs short of the target.

This semi-final created multiple records in the tournament.

- 34 sixes – most sixes in a T20 World Cup match
- 73 total boundaries – new tournament record
Earlier in the tournament, the match between Zimbabwe national cricket team and West Indies cricket team produced 31 sixes, which was the previous record.
In addition, the previous boundary record was 61, achieved in a match between England cricket team and South Africa national cricket team at the same venue in 2016.
India to Face New Zealand in the Final
After this dramatic victory, India will now face New Zealand national cricket team in the final.
The championship match will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
