India Evacuates Citizens Amid Crisis
The Government of India evacuated 1,777 Indian nationals from Iran as tensions continue in West Asia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the operation on Monday and highlighted strong international coordination.
Coordinated Efforts Ensure Safe Return
The Indian Embassy in Tehran actively coordinated evacuation efforts. Officials moved Indian citizens to Armenia and Azerbaijan, from where they boarded flights back to India.
Specifically:
- 1,545 Indians crossed into Armenia
- 234 Indians moved through Azerbaijan
As a result, authorities ensured a smooth and timely evacuation process.
Students and Fishermen Among Evacuees
The evacuation included 895 Indian students and 345 fishermen working in Iran. Notably, the fishermen safely returned to Chennai on April 4.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar thanked Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan for supporting the evacuation process.
India Extends Help Beyond Borders
In addition to Indian nationals, the embassy also helped two foreign nationals from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This step reflects India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance during global crises.
Casualties and Ongoing Efforts
However, the conflict has caused losses. Officials confirmed that eight Indian nationals lost their lives, while one person remains missing.
So far, authorities have brought back seven mortal remains. Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Oman continues efforts to repatriate the remaining one.
Background of the Conflict
The conflict began after joint military strikes by the US and Israel on Iran. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks across the region.
As a result, tensions disrupted key trade routes and impacted global energy markets.
Overall, India’s swift action highlights strong diplomatic coordination and crisis management. Although the situation remains uncertain, the government continues to prioritize the safety of its citizens abroad.
