India Strengthens Maritime Presence in Maldives
India has reinforced its regional outreach under the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy as INS Sunayna arrived in Male, the capital of Maldives, as part of the IOS SAGAR initiative.
The deployment reflects India’s strategic vision to enhance cooperation and security in the Indian Ocean Region.
Warm Welcome and Joint Naval Exercises
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) accorded a ceremonial welcome to INS Sunayna upon arrival. Before docking, Indian Navy personnel and MNDF Coast Guard conducted joint maritime exercises at sea.
These included:
- Tactical station-keeping
- Advanced signalling drills
- Small arms firing exercises
- Damage control and firefighting drills
As a result, both nations strengthened operational coordination and preparedness.
Multinational Crew and Strategic Engagement
INS Sunayna, a Saryu-class Offshore Patrol Vessel, carries a multinational crew from 16 friendly foreign countries, showcasing India’s commitment to international maritime collaboration.
Moreover, the ship’s three-day visit will include Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEE) to improve maritime domain awareness and interoperability.
India’s Role in the Indian Ocean Region
This visit marks the first international stop of a 50-day deployment under IOS SAGAR. It reinforces India’s position as a preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean Region.
Additionally, the initiative aligns with India’s vision of:
