Tehran, March 11: Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has accused Israel of assassinating four senior Iranian diplomats in Beirut. He described the attack as a serious violation of international law and urged the United Nations to take immediate action.
In a letter sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iravani said the Israeli government carried out a targeted strike on March 8 at the Ramada Hotel in Beirut, Lebanon. According to the envoy, the attack resulted in the deaths of four Iranian diplomats.
Iran Calls Attack a “Heinous Crime”
In his letter, Iravani strongly condemned the incident. He said the diplomats were official representatives of a sovereign state working in another sovereign nation.
The Iranian envoy called the attack “a heinous act of terrorism” and claimed it violated several international laws. He specifically referred to the United Nations Charter and the 1973 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Internationally Protected Persons.
Iravani also stated that Israeli forces had previously threatened Iranian representatives in Lebanon. Due to these threats, the diplomats had temporarily moved to the Ramada Hotel for safety.
Israeli Airstrikes Target Hezbollah Assets
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that it carried out another wave of airstrikes in Lebanon. The strikes targeted assets of the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association, which Israel claims finances Hezbollah’s weapons purchases and militant activities.
Israeli forces said the operation aimed to weaken Hezbollah’s military capabilities.
Hezbollah Commander Killed in Strike
The Israeli military also announced the killing of Hassan Salameh, the commander of Hezbollah’s Nassar Unit. According to the IDF, an Israeli Air Force strike killed Salameh in the Jwaya area of Lebanon.
Israeli officials said Salameh had held several key positions within Hezbollah and played an important role in its military operations.
Israel Conducts Strikes in Iran
The Israel Defense Forces also reported conducting combined strikes in Tehran and Tabriz.
According to the IDF, the targets included:
- A special units command centre in Tabriz
- An Imam Hassan security unit military compound in Tehran
- A command centre linked to ballistic missile launches and artillery operations
- An intelligence and general security police command centre in Maragheh Province
- A large Basij forces compound in Tabriz
Israel said the strikes aimed to disrupt Iran’s military coordination and missile operations.
Rising Tensions Across the Middle East
The conflict between Iran and Israel has now expanded across several countries in West Asia. Iran has launched missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. military bases, embassies, and energy infrastructure in countries such as:
- UAE
- Saudi Arabia
- Qatar
- Kuwait
- Bahrain
- Jordan
The escalating tensions have also disrupted global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route, handles nearly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply. Any disruption in this region can significantly affect global energy prices and supply chains.
