Tehran, March 20: Iran has claimed it struck a US F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter jet, marking what it calls the first successful hit on a fifth-generation aircraft.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its air defense systems targeted the jet at around 2:50 a.m. local time. Officials stated the aircraft was flying over central Iranian airspace when the system engaged it. They added that authorities are still investigating the jet’s condition, but suggested a crash is possible.
US Confirms Emergency Landing
US defense officials confirmed that an F-35 made an emergency landing at a military base in the Middle East. They believe Iranian surface-to-air missile (SAM) fire caused the incident.
US Central Command spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins said the jet was on a combat mission over Iran. He confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and that the pilot remains in stable condition. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Why the F-35 Matters
The F-35 Lightning II plays a key role in US and allied airpower. It costs over $100 million per unit and features advanced stealth technology. More than 19 countries either operate or plan to deploy this aircraft.
If Iran’s claim proves true, it could change how experts view stealth aircraft in modern warfare.
Ongoing Conflict Intensifies
The incident comes during a growing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The conflict began in late February and has continued to escalate.
Iran also claimed it shot down over 125 US-Israeli drones, showing progress in its air defense systems.
Despite this, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the campaign remains successful. He stated that US forces have weakened Iran’s air defenses and continue to make progress.
Other Incidents Reported
The conflict has seen additional incidents:
- Kuwaiti air defenses mistakenly shot down three US F-15 jets. All crew members ejected safely.
- A KC-135 Stratotanker crashed in western Iraq. All six crew members died. Officials have not linked the crash to enemy action.
US Deploys More Forces
The US has increased its military presence in the region. It deployed the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit from Okinawa along with the USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group.
As tensions rise, global attention remains on the situation. Experts continue to monitor whether Iran’s claim about the F-35 strike will be verified.
