Jammu and Kashmir Blast LIVE: How the Explosion Happened
Authorities were extracting samples from a large cache of explosives recovered in Faridabad. These explosives were part of an inter-State terror module case.
According to officials, the material weighed nearly 2,900 kg and included sensitive IED-making chemicals.
Moreover, the material was unstable and required extreme caution. The FSL team and police officers handled it for two days. Despite the precautions, the chemicals reacted suddenly and caused a massive blast around 11:20 p.m.
Blast Impact: Nine Dead, 32 Injured
The accidental blast killed:
- Three FSL members
- Two Revenue Department officials, including a Naib Tehsildar
- Two police photographers
- One State Investigation Agency member
- One tailor inside the premises
Additionally, 32 people suffered injuries, including 27 police personnel and five civilians. Many were shifted to various hospitals in Srinagar for treatment.
Jammu and Kashmir Blast LIVE: DGP Confirms Accident
J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat confirmed that the explosion was accidental.
He said the explosives were “extremely unstable and sensitive,” which made the sampling process risky.
Furthermore, he added that all recovered materials were handled according to standard operating procedure. The blast occurred despite strict safety measures.
Prabhat also said, “Any other speculation into the cause of this incident is unnecessary.”
Explosives Transported from Faridabad to Nowgam
Investigators traced the explosives to a terror module case uncovered earlier in the week.
Teams recovered the materials from Faridabad, Haryana. They transported them to the Nowgam police station for forensic testing.
The explosives were kept in an open but secured area inside the police station. Because of the large volume of material, the FSL team worked for two days to extract samples.
MHA Statement: Cause Under Investigation
Union Home Ministry Joint Secretary Prashant Lokhande stated that the cause of the explosion is still being determined.
He confirmed that the explosives were being forwarded for forensic testing as per protocol.
He again urged people not to speculate about the incident.
