Chennai, February 20:
Outgoing Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott reflected on his successful tenure with the national side after his final match in charge at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Afghanistan ended their campaign with a dominant 82-run win over Canada. However, earlier defeats to New Zealand and South Africa prevented them from qualifying for the Super 8 stage.
Trott’s Memorable Three-Year Tenure
The former England batter guided Afghanistan through more than three impactful years. His tenure included a historic semi-final appearance at the 2024 T20 World Cup and several milestone victories in bilateral series.
Trott said he leaves with pride and gratitude.
“I feel very fortunate to have coached some great players and good human beings. We achieved many special moments,” he said.
He recalled memorable wins against Pakistan and England in World Cup matches, along with landmark overseas victories against Bangladesh and South Africa.
Focus on Developing Fast Bowlers
Trott highlighted the need for Afghanistan to strengthen their pace attack. He stressed that the team must develop reliable seamers to complement star spinners like Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
He said building a balanced bowling attack will help Afghanistan compete in diverse conditions, especially ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa and Namibia.
According to Trott, Afghanistan have built strong batting depth but must now invest in developing quality fast bowlers to perform consistently across global tournaments.

Trott’s Future Plans
Trott admitted he is uncertain about his next move. He said he plans to take a short break before deciding his future.
He also expressed pride in his playing career with England and revealed that he would welcome the opportunity to coach England one day.
“I’m very proud of where I played my cricket. I’d love the chance to coach a team that you hold dear to your heart,” Trott added.
Afghanistan’s Road Ahead
Despite the early exit from the T20 World Cup 2026, Afghanistan demonstrated resilience and strong team spirit. Experts believe the foundation laid under Trott’s leadership has positioned the team for future success.
With a promising batting lineup and world-class spin attack, Afghanistan now aim to strengthen their pace department and build consistency for upcoming global tournaments.
