In a major judicial development, Justice Yashwant Varma has resigned from his position as a judge of the Allahabad High Court amid an ongoing inquiry linked to an impeachment motion in the Lok Sabha.
Resignation Submitted to the President
Justice Varma submitted his resignation to the President of India, stating, “It is with deep anguish that I tender my resignation… with immediate effect.”
Additionally, he sent a copy of the resignation letter to the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant.
He further mentioned that he did not wish to burden the President’s office with the reasons behind his decision. However, he described his tenure as an honour.
Inquiry Proceedings Were Underway
The resignation comes while an inquiry was already in progress under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968.
Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla constituted a three-member committee after receiving an impeachment motion signed by 146 Members of Parliament.
Moreover, the committee includes:
- Justice Arvind Kumar of the Supreme Court
- Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court
- Senior Advocate Vasudeva Acharya
Cash-at-Residence Controversy
The case is linked to an alleged cash recovery incident from Justice Varma’s official residence.
Back in March 2025, firefighters reportedly discovered a large amount of unaccounted cash at an outhouse of his residence in Delhi during a firefighting operation.
Consequently, the matter triggered serious concerns and led to demands for his removal.
🏛️ Political and Legal Implications
The resignation during an active inquiry marks a significant moment in India’s judicial and political landscape.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether the inquiry process will continue or be closed following his resignation.
Overall, Justice Varma’s resignation has brought a sudden turn in an already sensitive case involving allegations of misconduct. In conclusion, the development raises important questions about judicial accountability and the process of impeachment in India.
