Mumbai, February 23:
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar urged the India national cricket team to stay humble after its defeat against South Africa in the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Manjrekar said the loss exposed key weaknesses in India’s performance. He added that the team still has enough time to improve and qualify for the knockout stage.
South Africa scored 187/7 in 20 overs after strong performances from David Miller, Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs. Indian bowlers fought back, with Jasprit Bumrah taking three wickets.
India failed to build partnerships during the chase and got all out for 111 runs. Shivam Dube scored the highest runs for the team.
Struggles Against Spin Bowling
Manjrekar said Indian batters struggled against spin attack. He suggested promoting players who play spin well higher in the batting order. He also advised sending struggling batters lower down the order.
Problems Against Pace-Off Deliveries
He pointed out that Indian batters faced difficulty when bowlers reduced pace. Captain Suryakumar Yadav also looked uncomfortable against slower deliveries during the match.
Need for Stronger Bowling Attack
Manjrekar recommended strengthening the bowling unit instead of adding extra batting depth. He suggested including wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav as an additional wicket-taking option.
He said a stronger bowling attack can help India control matches even when batting struggles.
Manjrekar concluded that quick corrections in these areas can improve India’s chances of reaching the final rounds of the tournament.
