Mathura, Uttar Pradesh | April 11, 2026 — At least 10 people lost their lives after a tragic boat capsizing incident near Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan. Rescue operations are still ongoing, with several people reported missing.
Rescue Operations Continue in Yamuna River
The accident took place on Friday when a boat carrying around 25–27 passengers capsized in the Yamuna River. The incident reportedly occurred after the boat collided with a pontoon bridge during a sudden storm.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force are actively conducting search operations.
Officials confirmed that 21 people have been rescued, while 5 individuals are still missing.
Boat Retrieved After Intensive Efforts
According to Mathura DIG Shailesh Kumar Pandey, the capsized boat was retrieved after nearly four hours of continuous effort.
Post-mortem examinations of the deceased are almost complete. Authorities will soon hand over the bodies to their families.
PM Modi Announces Compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. He announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of each deceased victim from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
In addition, ₹50,000 compensation will be provided to those injured.
Government and Leaders React
Uttar Pradesh Minister Lakshmi Narayan Chaudhary called the incident unfortunate. He stated that many pilgrims from Haryana and Punjab were on board when the storm struck.
Meanwhile, Yogi Adityanath termed the incident “extremely tragic” and directed officials to ensure proper medical care for the injured.
AAP MLA Kulwant Sidhu also met the victims’ families and expressed condolences.
Families in Shock After Sudden Tragedy
Family members shared emotional accounts of the incident. Many victims had traveled to Mathura and Vrindavan for pilgrimage.
One relative said they had spoken to their family shortly before the accident, when they were happy and enjoying their trip. However, panic spread after news of the capsizing surfaced.
The Mathura boat tragedy has raised serious concerns about safety measures during river transport, especially during adverse weather conditions.
As rescue operations continue, authorities are focusing on locating the missing persons and supporting the affected families.
