MEA Afghan presser controversy in Delhi
MEA Clarifies Its Stand
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it had no role in the MEA Afghan presser held in New Delhi.
The statement came after reports claimed that women journalists were not allowed to attend the Afghan Foreign Minister’s press interaction.
Decision Taken by Taliban Officials
The ministry explained that Taliban officials made the decision on who could attend the event.
It added that India’s foreign ministry did not organize or host the press conference.
The MEA confirmed, “We had no involvement in the Afghan FM’s press interaction in Delhi.”
Reactions from Opposition Leaders
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called the incident an insult to India’s women journalists.
She said if the government truly supports women’s rights, such actions should not happen in India.
Former Home Minister P. Chidambaram also criticized the move.
He said male reporters should have walked out in solidarity with their female colleagues.
Event Held at the Afghan Embassy
The press event took place at the Afghanistan Embassy in Delhi after talks between S. Jaishankar and Amir Khan Muttaqi.
The Afghan side conducted its own briefing, while India did not hold a joint press meet.
Taliban’s Record on Women’s Rights
The Taliban regime has faced global criticism for restricting women’s rights in Afghanistan.
At the Delhi event, Muttaqi avoided direct questions about women’s freedoms.
He said each country has its own laws and customs, which must be respected.
