New Delhi, March 18, 2026: The Central government has approved 14 new campuses of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) to strengthen India’s forensic ecosystem and criminal justice system.
Expansion of NFSU Across India
Firstly, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced the expansion to improve scientific investigation and forensic capacity nationwide.
Bandi Sanjay Kumar informed the Rajya Sabha that new campuses will come up in multiple states.
The approved locations include:
- Goa
- Tripura (Agartala)
- Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal)
- Karnataka (Dharwad)
- Assam (Guwahati)
- Maharashtra (Nagpur)
- Odisha (Khordha)
- Chhattisgarh (Raipur)
- Tamil Nadu (Chengalpattu)
- Rajasthan
- Andhra Pradesh
- West Bengal
- Bihar
- Uttar Pradesh
Campuses Operating from Transit Facilities
Meanwhile, several campuses have already started functioning from transit facilities.
Authorities have allocated land in key locations such as Goa, Agartala, Bhopal, Dharwad, Guwahati, Nagpur, Khordha, Raipur, and Chengalpattu.
Additionally, the Jaipur campus in Rajasthan is also operating temporarily while permanent infrastructure is under development.
Focus on Strengthening Forensic Capabilities
Moreover, the government is actively enhancing forensic capabilities through collaborations.
The National Forensic Sciences University and the Directorate of Forensic Science Services are working with national and international institutions.
These efforts aim to:
- Improve research and innovation
- Build skilled manpower
- Strengthen forensic investigation systems
Integration with CFSLs for Better Coordination
In addition, the government plans to co-locate NFSU campuses with Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) in six states.
These include:
- Chhattisgarh
- Odisha
- Tamil Nadu
- Rajasthan
- Bihar
- Uttar Pradesh
This step will improve coordination between academic training and operational forensic services.
Advanced Courses and Technologies Offered
NFSU offers more than 60 academic programmes in forensic science and related fields.
Key areas include:
- DNA analysis
- Cyber and digital forensics
- Forensic psychology
- Narcotics and ballistic forensics
- Crime scene management
Furthermore, the university provides short-term training programmes to enhance skills among law enforcement and other stakeholders.
Expansion of CFSL Network
At the same time, the government has approved eight new CFSLs to support forensic services.
New locations include:
- Jammu & Kashmir
- Rajasthan
- Tamil Nadu
- Bihar
- Uttar Pradesh
- Odisha
- Chhattisgarh
- Kerala
Land has already been allocated in several of these regions.
Boost to Criminal Justice System
Overall, the expansion of NFSU and CFSLs will:
- Improve evidence-based investigations
- Speed up judicial processes
- Strengthen law enforcement capabilities
These steps mark a major push toward modernising India’s criminal justice system.
