Nizamabad (Telangana), February 7:
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday strongly criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his controversial remarks related to “Miya Muslims”, calling the statement discriminatory and against the Indian Constitution.
Speaking at a public rally in Nizamabad, Owaisi mocked Sarma and said he would give him “two rupees,” reacting to the Assam CM’s comments on paying less fare to an auto driver identified as a “Miya Muslim.”
Owaisi Mocks Assam CM: “I Know You’re a Beggar for Two Rupees”
Addressing the gathering, Owaisi said that Sarma had allegedly suggested people should pay less than the actual fare if the auto driver is a “Miya Muslim.”
Owaisi said,
“He says, if an auto driver is a Miya Muslim, give him less than the actual fare. If the fare is Rs 5, then give him Rs 4… Himanta Biswa Sarma, I’m giving you these two rupees, will you take it? I know you’re a beggar for two rupees… Should I transfer it to your account?”
The AIMIM chief’s remarks drew loud applause at the rally as he accused Sarma of promoting discrimination and hate.
“Our Constitution Says Everyone is Equal” – Owaisi
Owaisi further highlighted that the Indian Constitution guarantees equal rights to every citizen, irrespective of religion, caste, or community.
He accused the Assam CM of targeting Bengali-speaking Muslims and creating division.
“Our constitution says that everyone is equal. There should not be any discrimination even if you are the Prime Minister or the Chief Minister,” Owaisi said.
He also questioned Sarma’s alleged statement that “Miya Muslims should go to Bangladesh to cast votes,” and asked what the Assam CM wanted to achieve through such remarks.
What Does “Miya Muslim” Mean in Assam?
The controversy comes amid Himanta Biswa Sarma’s repeated attacks on illegal immigration and his usage of the term “Miya Muslims.”
The term is commonly used to refer to Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam. The issue has remained sensitive in the state due to political debates over migration and identity.
Assam CM Defends Remarks, Says Term Was Not Coined by Him
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier defended himself, stating that he did not invent the term.
He reportedly said the term “Miya Muslims” had already been used within the community itself, including those who migrated from Bangladesh, to refer to themselves.
Owaisi Also Targets Centre Over China-Ladakh Standoff Controversy
Apart from the Assam issue, Owaisi also attacked the Central government and raised questions about the recent controversy surrounding former Army Chief General MM Naravane’s unpublished memoir related to the 2020 China standoff in eastern Ladakh.
Owaisi said he had been raising concerns since the COVID period that China had infiltrated Indian territory.
He alleged that an Indian Army General had written that Chinese troops and tanks entered Ladakh and informed the Prime Minister’s Office.
Owaisi said,
“An Indian Army General wrote that Chinese troops and tanks had entered Ladakh, and he even called the Prime Minister’s Office… He informed all the concerned bureaucrats.”
BJP vs Opposition Clash Over Naravane Memoir Row
The unpublished memoir row escalated after Rahul Gandhi attempted to cite Naravane’s memoir in Parliament regarding the 2020 standoff.
BJP leaders claimed this violated House rules and could demoralise the armed forces, leading to a major political clash inside and outside Parliament.
Owaisi, however, questioned the BJP and RSS, asking why they “lacked courage” to retaliate against Chinese forces.
The remarks made by Owaisi have once again intensified political tensions over identity and discrimination in Assam. The debate around the “Miya Muslim” term and illegal immigration continues to remain a major political topic in the state, while the Ladakh-China standoff issue is also heating up political discourse at the national level.
