Guwahati, March 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will perform the Bhoomi Pujan of the Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor in Assam today during the second day of his two-day visit to the state. The project marks the first access-controlled Greenfield four-lane high-speed corridor in Northeast India, aimed at transforming connectivity and boosting regional development.
Shillong–Silchar Corridor to Boost Connectivity
The 166-kilometre Shillong–Silchar Corridor will be developed with an investment of approximately ₹22,860 crore. Once completed, the corridor will significantly enhance connectivity between Meghalaya and Assam.
Currently, travel between Guwahati and Silchar takes around 8.5 hours. However, the new corridor will reduce the travel time to approximately five hours, making transportation faster and more efficient.
Moreover, the project will strengthen trade routes, encourage tourism, and support economic growth across Northeast India. Improved connectivity will also facilitate cross-border trade with neighbouring countries.
Elevated Corridor in Silchar
In addition, the Prime Minister will perform the Bhoomi Pujan for an elevated corridor on NH-306. The corridor will stretch from Trunk Road near Capital Point to Rangirkhari Point in Silchar (Phase I).
This infrastructure project will reduce traffic congestion on one of Silchar’s busiest roads. Furthermore, it will improve connectivity with neighbouring states such as Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur.
As a result, the project will contribute significantly to the economic development of the Barak Valley region.
New Agriculture College in Karimganj
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will also lay the foundation stone for a new College of Agriculture at Patharkandi in Karimganj district.
The institution will strengthen agricultural education and research in the region. Additionally, it will provide students from Barak Valley and nearby areas access to high-quality agricultural education closer to home.
Public Rally and Development Initiatives
Later, the Prime Minister will address a public rally at Ramnagar in Assam.
Earlier on March 13, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹4,570 crore in Kokrajhar.
Furthermore, in Guwahati, the Prime Minister launched 13 major projects worth ₹19,577.58 crore across sectors such as hydrocarbons, power, shipping, and railways at an event held at Jyoti Bishnu Antarjataik Kala Mandir.
The event took place in the presence of Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Additionally, Prime Minister Modi distributed land ownership rights to tea workers, a move aimed at improving their economic security and livelihoods. He also released the 22nd instalment of the PM Kisan scheme for farmers across the country.
Major Step for Northeast Infrastructure
The Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor and related projects highlight the government’s continued focus on strengthening infrastructure in Northeast India.
With faster transport, improved logistics, and better connectivity, these initiatives are expected to drive economic growth, boost trade, and enhance development across the region.
