Kolkata, March 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth ₹18,680 crore in Kolkata on Friday. The projects aim to strengthen infrastructure, boost trade, and accelerate economic growth across West Bengal and the eastern region of the country.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said these initiatives would create new opportunities for businesses and improve the quality of life for millions of people.
Major Push for Infrastructure Development
PM Modi highlighted that the projects will significantly improve road connectivity and industrial growth in the region. He said the completion of the Kharagpur–Moregram Expressway will accelerate economic activities across the state.
The expressway is expected to reduce the travel distance by around 120 kilometres and save 7–8 hours of travel time, making transportation faster and more efficient.
In addition, the Dubrajpur Bypass will help decongest traffic in Dubrajpur town and improve road safety.
National Highway Projects Across 420 km
The development package includes several National Highway projects covering more than 420 kilometres, with an investment of approximately ₹16,990 crore.
These projects will improve road safety, reduce travel time, and enhance connectivity between different districts in West Bengal. Moreover, improved highways are expected to boost tourism and facilitate smoother transportation of goods.
Expansion of Rail Infrastructure
The Prime Minister also spoke about the ongoing modernisation of India’s railway network. He emphasised that the central government aims to ensure that West Bengal benefits from these efforts.
Key railway initiatives include:
- Introduction of the Purulia–Delhi Express
- Redevelopment of six railway stations
- Development of two new railway lines to improve connectivity and passenger safety
These railway projects aim to make train travel more efficient and comfortable for passengers.
Development of Ports and Waterways
PM Modi also highlighted the importance of ports and waterways in driving economic growth in eastern India.
He noted that ports such as Haldia Dock Complex and Kolkata Port have historically served as key trade hubs.
Currently, the Haldia Dock Complex is undergoing mechanisation, which will accelerate cargo operations, improve efficiency, and expand port capacity.
Additionally, the government plans to rejuvenate the Khidderpore Docks, which will further strengthen maritime trade infrastructure in the region.
Boost to Eastern India’s Economy
The Prime Minister said eastern India has huge economic potential that remained underutilised for many years. However, with the expansion of infrastructure, railways, highways, and waterways, the region is witnessing new growth opportunities.
According to Modi, these projects will play a major role in strengthening trade, industry, logistics, and connectivity in West Bengal and neighbouring states.
