Haldia (West Bengal), April 9, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced a set of “six guarantees” for West Bengal, promising improved governance, implementation of the 7th Pay Commission, and strict action against corruption under the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
PM Modi Announces Six Key Guarantees
Addressing a public rally in Haldia, PM Modi outlined six major commitments aimed at transforming governance in the state:
- Restoration of Trust: Replace the current “atmosphere of fear” with trust and strengthen the rule of law
- Accountable Governance: Ensure administrative machinery remains fully answerable to the public
- Reopening of Cases: Reinvestigate corruption, scams, and crimes against women
- Strict Legal Action: Take action against all involved in corruption, regardless of position
- Refugee Rights: Provide constitutional rights to refugees while taking action against illegal infiltrators
- 7th Pay Commission Implementation: Introduce salary reforms for government employees upon formation of a BJP government
Strong Attack on TMC Government
PM Modi launched a sharp attack on the ruling TMC, alleging widespread corruption and lawlessness. He asserted that under a BJP-led government, no individual involved in wrongdoing would escape legal action.
He emphasized that justice and accountability would be the cornerstone of governance if political change occurs in the state.
Push for “Double Engine” Government
Highlighting the importance of coordination between the Centre and the state, PM Modi stressed the need for a “double engine government”—where both central and state governments are led by the same party.
According to him, such alignment would:
- Accelerate development
- Improve implementation of central schemes
- Strengthen governance efficiency
Focus on Fisheries and Blue Economy
PM Modi also highlighted the Centre’s initiatives to boost the fisheries sector:
- Establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Fisheries
- Record budget allocation for fishermen welfare
- Extension of Kisan Credit Card (KCC) benefits
- Insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh for fishermen
He added that a BJP government in West Bengal would ensure faster implementation of these schemes, making the state self-reliant in fisheries and seafood production.
West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026
Polling for the 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be conducted in two phases:
- April 23, 2026
- April 29, 2026
The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, 2026.
Previous Election Results
In the 2021 Assembly elections:
- Trinamool Congress won 213 seats
- Bharatiya Janata Party secured 77 seats
- Congress and Left Front failed to win any seats
With the announcement of six guarantees, PM Narendra Modi has intensified the political battle in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The promises of governance reforms, anti-corruption measures, and economic development are expected to play a crucial role in shaping voter sentiment in the state.
