Moscow, January 9 :
Russia on Thursday warned that recent US actions against the oil tanker Marinera could escalate military and political tensions in the Euro-Atlantic region.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) urged Washington to follow international maritime law and immediately stop what it called unlawful actions against civilian vessels.
Russia Accuses US of Illegal Use of Force
In an official statement, Russia accused the US Armed Forces of illegally boarding and seizing the Marinera on January 7 in international waters.
The ministry said the tanker was legally authorised to fly the Russian flag on December 24 and was travelling peacefully to a Russian port.
“Clear Violation of Maritime Law,” Says Russia
Russia stated that international maritime law gives exclusive jurisdiction to the flag state on the high seas.
Stopping or inspecting a vessel is allowed only in cases of piracy or slave trade.
According to Russia, neither condition applied to the Marinera.
The MFA said US authorities had full knowledge of the vessel’s Russian registration and civilian status.
Russia Denied Consent for Inspection
The ministry confirmed that Russia refused consent for any inspection of the tanker.
It also said Moscow had formally protested the US Coast Guard’s continued pursuit of the vessel.
Crew Safety and Environmental Risks Raised
Russia expressed concern for the safety of the Marinera’s crew, which includes citizens from multiple countries.
The MFA warned that the armed seizure during severe weather risked environmental damage in the North Atlantic.
US Sanctions Rejected by Moscow
Russia rejected US claims based on domestic sanctions laws.
The ministry said unilateral sanctions lack legal authority under international law.
It also dismissed suggestions that the seizure aimed to control Venezuela’s oil resources, calling them neo-colonial and cynical.
Russia Demands Humane Treatment of Crew
Russia demanded that the US ensure humane treatment of Russian citizens aboard the tanker.
It also called for their swift and safe return home.
The tanker Marinera, earlier named Bella 1, was seized after weeks of pursuit by the US Coast Guard.
Russia concluded that no country has the right to use force against lawfully registered vessels in international waters.
