China-Taiwan Dispute Explained
China claims Taiwan as part of its territory. However, Taiwan operates as a self-governing entity with its own government, military, and economy.
The issue remains one of the most sensitive geopolitical disputes in the world.
Historical Background
The dispute dates back to 1949, when the Chinese Civil War led to two separate governments:
- People’s Republic of China (PRC) on the mainland
- Republic of China (ROC) in Taiwan
Since then, Taiwan has functioned independently but has avoided declaring formal independence.
Global Concerns
Rising military activity in the Taiwan Strait has raised international concerns. Experts warn that continued escalation could affect regional stability and global trade routes.
