New York, US | March 12, 2026: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted a resolution condemning Iran’s alleged attacks on several regional neighbours in the Middle East. India joined 135 countries in supporting the resolution, which strongly criticises Tehran for escalating violence in the region.
The resolution, numbered 2817 (2026), passed with 13 votes in favour, while China and Russia abstained during the voting. The decision comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise following a conflict that began on February 28 and now involves multiple countries.
UNSC Condemns Iran’s Attacks on Regional Countries
The resolution condemns Iran for attacks targeting several countries in the Gulf region. According to the text, Iran carried out strikes against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan.
The Security Council strongly criticised the attacks on residential areas and civilian infrastructure. Members demanded that Iran immediately stop these actions.
The resolution also called on Tehran to end threats and activities that interfere with maritime trade routes in the region.
India Among Nations Supporting the Resolution
Nearly 140 United Nations member states, including India, co-sponsored the resolution. Many countries supported the move as tensions across the Middle East continue to escalate.
The United States, which currently holds the presidency of the Security Council for March, stated that the resolution sends a strong message against regional aggression.
Officials emphasised the need to protect civilian lives and maintain stability in international shipping routes.
Mixed Reactions from Global Powers
While most members supported the resolution, China and Russia chose to abstain from the vote.
China said the resolution does not fully represent the root causes of the conflict. Chinese representatives argued that the document lacks balance and does not present the entire situation.
Russia also criticised the resolution, calling it “biased and one-sided.” Moscow said the language used in the document unfairly blames Iran.
Russia’s Draft Resolution Fails
After the first vote, the Security Council also reviewed a separate draft resolution proposed by Russia. The Russian draft aimed to reduce tensions without naming any country directly.
However, the proposal failed to pass as it received only four votes in favour.
Several countries opposed the draft resolution, saying it did not clearly address the attacks or assign responsibility.
Iran Rejects the Resolution
Iran strongly rejected the UNSC resolution during the meeting.
Tehran’s representative called the resolution a “manifest injustice” against Iran and said it damages the credibility of the Security Council.
However, Israel welcomed the decision, saying the resolution sends a clear message that attacks on civilians and cities cannot be justified.
Rising Tensions in the Middle East
The conflict between Iran and several regional countries has increased tensions across the Middle East. Security experts warn that continued escalation could affect regional stability, maritime trade, and global energy supplies.
The United Nations has urged all parties to avoid further escalation and work toward diplomatic solutions.
