Washington, March 14: The United States has deployed the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli and a Marine strike group to West Asia. The move comes as tensions rise with Iran near the critical Strait of Hormuz.
According to US defence officials, the Pentagon has ordered the deployment of the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group (ARG). The mission also includes around 2,500 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).
Deployment of USS Tripoli Strike Group
The strike group operates under the United States Seventh Fleet. Currently, the ships are based in Japan. However, they are expected to reach the operational zone of United States Central Command within one to two weeks.
The strike group includes several powerful naval assets:
- USS Tripoli
- USS Robert Smalls
- USS Rafael Peralta
- 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU)
Meanwhile, the deployment will strengthen the US military presence in the region. Reports indicate that more than 50,000 US troops are already operating across West Asia.
Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz plays a crucial role in global trade. It connects the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea. As a result, it serves as one of the world’s most important energy corridors.
Nearly one-fifth of the global oil supply passes through this narrow waterway. Therefore, any disruption can directly impact international oil markets.
In addition, Iran’s southern coastline runs along the strait. Ships entering or leaving the Gulf often receive radio communications from Iranian maritime authorities.
Rising Tensions Between the US and Iran
Recently, tensions between the United States and Iran have increased significantly. Iranian-linked attacks near the Strait of Hormuz disrupted maritime traffic.
Consequently, tanker movement slowed in the region. This happened after military strikes conducted by the United States and Israel against Iran in late February.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump issued strong statements against Iran’s leadership. He also warned that Washington could take further military action if the situation escalates.
Capabilities of USS Tripoli
The USS Tripoli is one of the largest amphibious assault ships in the US Navy. Its size is comparable to a small aircraft carrier.
The ship can carry:
- F-35B Joint Strike Fighter jets
- MV-22 Osprey aircraft
- Multiple helicopters
- More than 1,700 Marines and military equipment
Additionally, amphibious assault ships support sea-to-shore military operations. They allow troops, vehicles, and aircraft to deploy quickly during combat missions.
Global Impact and Security Concerns
The deployment highlights growing security concerns in West Asia. It also shows the strategic importance of protecting global shipping routes.
If tensions continue to rise, the situation could affect international trade, energy supply, and regional stability.
For now, the arrival of the USS Tripoli strike group aims to strengthen security and safeguard maritime traffic near the Strait of Hormuz.
