Chamoli (Uttarakhand), December 31:
A serious accident occurred late Tuesday night in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district when two loco trains collided inside a tunnel of the THDC hydropower project near Pipalkoti. The collision injured around 60 people, officials confirmed.
The accident took place at around 9:30 pm during a shift change, according to Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar. At the time of the incident, 109 workers were travelling in the trains.
District Magistrate Kumar said that 42 injured people were admitted to the district hospital, while 17 others were shifted to Vivekananda Hospital in Pipalkoti for treatment. Medical teams immediately responded and provided emergency care to the injured workers.
Meanwhile, Chamoli Superintendent of Police Surjeet Singh stated that four to five workers suffered fractures, while others sustained minor injuries. He added that police and administrative officials are present at both hospitals and are continuously monitoring the situation.
Soon after the collision, rescue teams evacuated the injured from the tunnel. Ambulances transported them to nearby hospitals without delay. Authorities ensured that all injured workers received timely medical attention.
Earlier the same day, another tragic accident occurred in Uttarakhand’s Almora district. A private bus travelling from Bhikiyasain to Ramnagar fell into a deep gorge, resulting in the death of six to seven passengers on the spot. Several injured passengers were admitted to the Government Hospital in Bhikiyasain.
Reacting to both incidents, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow. He described the accidents as painful and heart-wrenching. The Chief Minister said that the administration is closely monitoring the situation and ensuring proper treatment for the injured.
Authorities have now ordered an investigation into the loco train collision at the THDC project site. Officials are examining safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
