New Delhi [India], February 4 :
The West Indies cricket team head into the upcoming T20 World Cup searching for consistency and renewed momentum, but without their most prolific T20I batter, Nicholas Pooran, who retired from international cricket last year.
The two-time champions arrive at the marquee event after a mixed run of results since their Super Eight exit in the 2024 edition. While flashes of their trademark power-hitting have surfaced, narrow defeats and inconsistency continue to haunt them.
Mixed Results Since T20 World Cup 2024
Since the last T20 World Cup, West Indies have won just 14 of 43 matches, losing 27, with two ending in no result.
In 12 bilateral series during this period, the team managed only two series wins—one at home and one away in Bangladesh. Losses followed against teams like England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Afghanistan.
Shai Hope Emerges as Key Positive
One of the biggest positives for West Indies has been the rise of captain Shai Hope as a reliable T20 batter.
Since 2023, Hope has scored 1,151 runs in 41 T20Is at an average of nearly 35, with a strike rate above 143. His improved consistency has strengthened the top order.
Top Performers for West Indies
Several players have delivered strong individual performances since the last World Cup:
- Rovman Powell has scored 698 runs in 32 matches
- Shimron Hetmyer struck at over 180
- Romario Shepherd contributed with both bat and ball
- Akeal Hosein led the spin attack with 38 wickets
- Jason Holder chipped in as a valuable all-rounder
Franchise Cricket Experience a Major Advantage
Nearly every member of the West Indies squad enters the tournament with extensive franchise cricket exposure. Their regular participation in global T20 leagues has helped maintain match fitness and adaptability.
Major Concerns Ahead of the Tournament
The biggest setback for West Indies remains the absence of Nicholas Pooran, their leading T20I run-scorer.
The team also struggles with a low collective batting average and inconsistent performances from senior players like Roston Chase. In the spin department, Akeal Hosein carries much of the burden.
Group Stage and Tournament Opener
West Indies are placed in Group C alongside England cricket team, Nepal, Scotland, and Italy.
They will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Scotland on February 7 in Kolkata.
