New Delhi, August 10, 2026: The Indian stock market opened largely flat on Monday, with benchmark indices registering marginal gains as investors remained cautiously optimistic amid better-than-expected first-quarter earnings, resilient domestic demand and continued buying by foreign institutional investors.
The Indian stock market began the session with a mildly bullish undertone. The BSE Sensex stood at 78,539.11 points, gaining 39.94 points or 0.05 per cent, while the NSE Nifty 50 was at 24,578.35 points, up 7.70 points or 0.03 per cent during the opening session.
Market analysts said that corporate earnings and domestic economic resilience continue to provide support to the Indian stock market, even as investors remain watchful of global developments, monsoon conditions and key technical levels.
Indian Stock Market Sentiment Remains Mildly Bullish
Commenting on the market outlook, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, said the underlying sentiment in the Indian stock market remains positive.
According to Vijayakumar, better-than-expected first-quarter corporate earnings have emerged as one of the major factors supporting the market.
He said the majority of companies reporting their first-quarter results have delivered earnings growth above expectations. With the earnings season approaching its conclusion, investors are assessing whether strong corporate performance can continue supporting equity valuations.
The positive earnings trend has provided some stability to the Indian stock market, particularly at a time when global markets are also showing strength.
Domestic Demand Supports Market Outlook
Resilient domestic demand is another factor expected to support the Indian stock market in the second quarter.
Vijayakumar said strong domestic demand could help companies maintain revenue and earnings growth in the coming months.
Several important sectors are expected to remain areas of interest for investors, including banking and financial services, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, metals and digital platform companies.
Despite challenges such as deficient monsoon conditions in some areas, the performance of these sectors is expected to remain relatively strong, according to the market strategist.
For investors tracking the Indian stock market, the performance of these sectors could remain important as companies move beyond the first-quarter earnings season.
Foreign Investor Buying Provides Support
Foreign institutional investor activity is another important factor influencing the Indian stock market.
Vijayakumar highlighted that foreign institutional investors, or FIIs, turned buyers in July and continued purchasing on most trading days during August so far.
Continued foreign buying can provide additional support to domestic equity markets by improving liquidity and investor sentiment.
The strategist also noted that monsoon conditions have shown some improvement, with good rainfall in July partly compensating for earlier deficiencies.
These developments have helped maintain resilience in the Indian stock market despite concerns surrounding weather conditions and global economic headwinds.
Sensex and Nifty Trade Near Key Levels
At the opening of Monday’s session, the Sensex and Nifty recorded only marginal gains.
The Sensex gained 39.94 points, or 0.05 per cent, to reach 78,539.11 points. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 rose 7.70 points, or 0.03 per cent, to 24,578.35 points.
The limited movement indicated cautious trading among investors.
Market participants are closely watching whether the benchmark indices can move beyond important resistance levels. A sustained breakout could potentially strengthen the positive trend in the Indian stock market, while a decline below key support levels could increase selling pressure.
Asian Markets Maintain Positive Bias
The performance of other Asian markets also provided a broadly positive backdrop for the Indian stock market.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 advanced 2.03 per cent to 66,940.00, while Taiwan’s Taiwan Weighted index gained 1.87 per cent to 45,068.92.
China’s Shanghai Composite also traded higher, rising 0.20 per cent to 3,947.91.
Meanwhile, GIFT NIFTY remained largely flat at 24,641.50.
The mixed but generally positive trend across Asian markets offered some support to investor sentiment in India.
Global market movements remain important for the Indian stock market, particularly as international investors assess economic growth, commodity prices and monetary policy developments.
US Markets End Higher
US markets also provided a positive signal after ending the previous session with gains.
The S&P 500 rose 0.62 per cent to 7,757.64, while the Nasdaq gained 1.30 per cent to 26,690.62.
Dow Jones Futures, however, were marginally lower by 0.07 per cent at 53,999.12.
The strength in US equities may influence sentiment in the Indian stock market, although domestic factors such as corporate earnings, foreign fund flows and economic demand remain important drivers.
Crude Oil and Gold Prices
Commodity prices also remained on investors’ radar during Monday’s trading session.
At the time of reporting, Brent crude increased 0.95 per cent to USD 84.35 per barrel, while crude oil gained 0.81 per cent to USD 78.81 per barrel.
Gold prices, meanwhile, declined 0.38 per cent to USD 4,326.83.
Changes in crude oil prices can have a significant impact on the Indian economy because India imports a substantial amount of its energy requirements. As a result, movements in oil prices remain an important factor for investors tracking the Indian stock market.
Technical Outlook for Nifty and Sensex
From a technical perspective, Shrikant Chouhan of Kotak Securities said the near-term outlook remains positive.
However, he said a fresh uptrend would require the Nifty and Sensex to cross important resistance levels.
According to Chouhan, a sustained move above the 24,800 Nifty and 79,400 Sensex levels could open the possibility of a further upward move. He indicated that the market could then move towards 25,000 on the Nifty and 80,200 on the Sensex.
These levels will therefore remain important for traders monitoring the Indian stock market.
Key Support Levels for Indian Stock Market
While the near-term outlook remains positive, analysts have also highlighted downside risks.
Chouhan said that a break below the immediate support zone of 24,600 on the Nifty and 78,400 on the Sensex could lead to additional selling pressure.
According to the technical outlook, the Nifty could retest 24,500-24,450, while the Sensex could move towards 78,100-77,900 if these support levels are breached.
A breakdown below 24,450 on the Nifty and 77,900 on the Sensex could accelerate selling pressure further, with the indices potentially moving towards 24,200 and 77,200 respectively.
For traders, these technical levels could therefore remain crucial for determining the short-term direction of the Indian stock market.
Outlook for Indian Stock Market
Overall, the Indian stock market started Monday’s session on a stable note, supported by strong corporate earnings, resilient domestic demand, foreign investor buying and improving monsoon conditions.
While the market remains vulnerable to global developments, commodity price movements and technical resistance, the underlying sentiment continues to be mildly positive.
Investors will closely track the remaining corporate earnings announcements, foreign fund flows and developments across major sectors.
Banking and financial services, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, metals and digital platforms could remain important sectors to watch as investors evaluate the strength of India’s economic recovery and corporate profitability.
The coming trading sessions will be important for the Indian stock market, particularly as the Sensex and Nifty approach key resistance levels. A decisive move above these levels could strengthen bullish sentiment, while a break below immediate support could trigger increased volatility.
For now, the market’s cautious opening reflects a balance between positive domestic fundamentals and the risks that continue to influence investor sentiment
