Mexico City, December 29:
At least 13 people lost their lives and 98 others sustained injuries after a passenger train derailed on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railway in Mexico on Sunday, the Mexican Navy Secretariat confirmed.
The accident occurred on the Salina Cruz–Coatzacoalcos route, part of the country’s Interoceanic Corridor, when the train operating on Line Z met with a tragic derailment.
Train Was Carrying Around 250 Passengers
According to the Mexican Navy, the passenger train was carrying approximately 250 passengers at the time of the accident.
Of the 98 injured, authorities said:
- 36 passengers are receiving hospital treatment
- The remaining injured suffered non-serious injuries
- 139 passengers are reported to be out of danger
“As a result of this accident, 139 people are out of danger, 98 were injured, of whom 36 are receiving hospital medical attention, and unfortunately, 13 people lost their lives,” the Navy said in a statement.
Navy Expresses Condolences, Assures Transparency
The Mexican Navy Secretariat, which oversees the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, expressed its deepest condolences to the families of those who died.
The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to:
- Act responsibly and transparently
- Follow all legal protocols
- Provide immediate assistance to victims and their families
Massive Search and Rescue Operation Launched
Following the derailment, authorities launched large-scale search and rescue operations, deploying:
- 360 naval personnel
- 20 vehicles
- 4 ground ambulances
- 3 air ambulances
- 1 tactical drone
Emergency teams continue to coordinate with multiple agencies to assist victims and determine the cause of the accident.
Mexican President Directs Senior Officials to Site
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo directed the Secretary of the Navy and the Deputy Secretary of Human Rights from the Secretariat of the Interior to visit the accident site and personally attend to the affected families.
She confirmed that injured passengers are receiving treatment at:
- IMSS hospitals in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz
- IMSS-Wellbeing hospitals in Juchitán and Ixtepec
The President said the Secretary of the Interior will coordinate relief and rehabilitation efforts, while local delegates assist with medical care.
Authorities to Continue Updates
President Sheinbaum stated that the government will continue to provide updates as investigations progress and relief operations continue, thanking the Governor of Oaxaca and his team for their support.
