Bangladesh authorities have decided to try the murder case of Sharif Osman Hadi under the Speedy Trial Tribunal to ensure quick justice.
Law Adviser Asif Nazrul announced the decision on Monday through a Facebook post. He confirmed that the case will proceed under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002. According to the law, the tribunal must complete the trial within 90 days after police submit the investigation report.
Government Calls Case a Top Priority
Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the government is giving the case the highest priority. He stated that investigators have made significant progress and are actively searching for the main accused, Faisal Karim Masud.
Jahangir Alam assured that authorities will bring everyone involved in the killing to justice. He spoke after a law and order meeting at the Secretariat.
Ten Arrested So Far
Joint forces, including the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), have arrested 10 people in connection with the murder. The arrested individuals include the prime suspect’s wife, parents, brother-in-law, and the owner of the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.
When asked about the main shooter’s location, the home adviser said investigators are still tracking him. He refused to disclose further details due to the sensitivity of the investigation.
Incident and Aftermath
Unknown assailants shot Sharif Osman Hadi at close range on December 12 in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area. The attack occurred a day after the Election Commission announced the national election schedule.
Doctors airlifted Hadi to Singapore for advanced treatment on December 15. He died from his injuries on December 18.
His death triggered widespread protests across Dhaka. Protesters demanded swift and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Political Impact and National Mourning
Inqilab Moncho, a platform formed during the July uprising, warned of launching a mass movement if justice is delayed. The group accused the government of negligence and lack of urgency.
Hadi played a key role in the July uprising that led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government. He was also a potential candidate from Dhaka-8 in the February 2026 national elections.
Following his death, the interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus declared a national day of mourning on December 20.
