French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said the future of Artificial Intelligence will be shaped by those who combine technology with humanity. He delivered the remarks while addressing the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
Macron praised India’s role in strengthening Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). According to him, India has built a system that helps citizens enter the digital economy at scale.
For example, Macron mentioned a street vendor in Mumbai. Ten years ago, the vendor could not open a bank account. Today, the same person can accept payments through a smartphone.
He also highlighted India’s digital identity system for 1.4 billion people. In addition, he praised India’s payment network that processes 20 billion transactions every month.
Macron further spoke about India’s digital health ecosystem. He said the country has issued 500 million digital health IDs.
Macron Says AI Can Transform Key Sectors
Macron said AI can help humanity innovate faster. At the same time, he said the technology must serve society responsibly.
He noted that AI can disrupt sectors like healthcare, energy, mobility, agriculture and public services. Moreover, he said such transformation should benefit mankind.
France Praises India’s Sovereign AI Approach
Macron said AI has become a major field of strategic global competition. As a result, chips, GPUs and AI models now influence geopolitics and macroeconomics.
However, Macron said India has shown a different approach. He praised India’s choice of building small language models. These models remain task-specific and can run on smartphones.
Additionally, Macron said India built the first government-funded AI system. He also said the country deployed 38,000 GPUs at affordable rates for startups.
