New York, March 7: Iran has strongly criticized the United States after the alleged sinking of its naval frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean. Iran called the incident a war crime and a violation of international law.
Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, made the statement during a media briefing at the UN Headquarters.
Iran Claims US Attack Killed Nearly 100 Sailors
According to Iravani, the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was on a goodwill visit with the Indian Navy. The ship was sailing in international waters when the attack happened.
The vessel carried around 130 sailors. Iranian officials say nearly 100 sailors lost their lives in the incident.
Iravani described the attack as a dangerous act of aggression at sea.
He said the incident happened almost 2,000 miles away from Iran’s coastline. He also said the attack violated international maritime laws.
“The United States carried out a dangerous act of aggression. The Iranian frigate Dena was on a goodwill visit and sailing in international waters. Nearly 100 Iranian sailors were martyred. The US committed a war crime,” Iravani said.
Iran Calls for UN Security Council Action
Iran has asked the United Nations Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to take immediate action.
Iravani urged the council to condemn the attack and stop further military actions against Iran. He also asked the international community to ensure accountability for violations of international law.
Iran says the global community must act quickly and firmly to prevent further escalation.
Iranian Foreign Minister Warns of Response
Iranian Foreign Minister Syed Abbas Araghchi also criticized the United States. He warned that Iran may respond by targeting US bases and institutions.
Araghchi shared his statement on the social media platform X.
He accused the US of launching attacks from the territory of allied Arab countries.
“Iran and the Arab nations have lived together peacefully for centuries. However, the American aggressors launched attacks from the lands of our Arab friends. They targeted innocent civilians and children in Iran,” Araghchi said.
He added that Iran’s response could target American military bases and related institutions.
Deadly Strike on School Raises Global Concern
Tensions increased after a strike reportedly hit Minab Girls’ Primary School in Iran’s Hormozgan province.
Reports say the attack killed over 160 people and injured more than 100 others.
A recent CNN analysis suggested the United States may have carried out the strike. The report triggered strong international reactions and criticism.
Rising Tensions in the Region
The incident has increased tensions between Iran and the United States. Experts warn that the conflict could affect maritime security and regional stability.
Many countries have called for diplomatic talks and an independent investigation. The global community now watches closely as the situation develops.
