New Delhi [India], April 3:
Former High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, Veena Sikri, commented on US President Donald Trump’s recent address regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran. She stated that Trump’s remarks show his intent to “keep all options open.” Sikri noted that the speech primarily restated Trump’s earlier comments made on social media and in press briefings, rather than offering new policies.
Trump’s Speech Repeats Earlier Stance
Sikri explained that many commentators in the US saw Trump’s speech as a repeat of his previous positions. She highlighted that his warning of striking Iran “very hard” in the next two to three weeks and taking its capabilities “back to the stone ages” signaled Washington’s willingness to escalate military action.
“Most people in America feel there’s nothing new in what he said. He’s just repeating what he said on Truth Social and in press conferences. This comment keeps all the options open for President Trump. He intends to hit Iran hard and take them back to the stone ages. This means all options remain open,” Sikri said.
US Military Presence in the Middle East
Sikri pointed out the significant US troop deployments in the Middle East as a sign that American forces are preparing for more than just defensive actions. “The large number of US forces shows they’ll play an active role. When you talk about bombing Iran to the Stone Ages, there’s also a discussion about the possible use of a tactical nuclear missile,” Sikri said.
Iran’s Positive Message and Diplomatic Path
Sikri also discussed Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s recent comments, where he emphasized that Iran does not harbour hostility toward ordinary Americans. Sikri viewed this as a positive signal for diplomacy and de-escalation. She stressed that military pressure should not hinder diplomatic negotiations.
Diplomatic Efforts Before the Conflict
Before hostilities broke out on February 28, talks between the US and Iran, mediated by Oman, were progressing. Iran reportedly showed a willingness to meet US demands on its nuclear program. Sikri noted that the sudden shift from negotiation to conflict caught many by surprise, disrupting diplomatic efforts and undermining trust.
Call for Renewed Dialogue
Sikri called for direct, serious talks to resume without media interference. “Iran’s message of no hostility towards the people of the USA is significant. Their appeal should lead to a cessation of hostilities and open the door for dialogue and diplomacy,” she concluded.
