MI vs RR IPL 2026
Guwahati, April 8, 2026:
In a rain-shortened clash of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, the Mumbai Indians suffered a 27-run defeat against the Rajasthan Royals. Following the loss, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene admitted that the team failed to execute their plans effectively.
MI Struggle With Execution in Rain-Curtailed Match
Speaking after the game, Jayawardene highlighted that despite having clear strategies, the team could not deliver on the field.
“We had some plans, but I don’t think we executed those. The margins are very small. We missed our line and lengths, and they played really well,” he said.
He further acknowledged the challenges of a rain-curtailed match, where aggressive batting upfront often changes the game dynamics.
RR’s Dominant Batting Performance
Rajasthan Royals delivered an outstanding batting display, posting 150/3 in just 11 overs.
- Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed 77 off 32 balls*
- Vaibhav Sooryavanshi added a quickfire 39 off 14 balls
Their aggressive approach gave RR a strong advantage in the shortened format.
MI Collapse in Chase
Chasing the target, Mumbai Indians faltered early:
- Ryan Rickelton – 8 runs
- Suryakumar Yadav – 6 runs
- Rohit Sharma – 5 runs
The early collapse left MI struggling at 22/3, making it difficult to build momentum.
Bowlers Seal the Win for RR
RR’s bowling unit played a crucial role in defending the total:
- Nandre Burger – 2/21
- Sandeep Sharma – 2/25
- Ravi Bishnoi – 2/26
Their disciplined bowling ensured MI never got close to the target.
Jayawardene Reflects on Missed Opportunities
Jayawardene emphasized that MI needed just a few partnerships to stay in the game.
“We just needed a couple of partnerships. We lost early wickets and couldn’t find momentum. The difference was just four sixes,” he added.
Despite the defeat, he remained optimistic, stating that the team will work on improving execution in upcoming matches.
