Gandhinagar, June 23: In a landmark initiative to promote innovation among school students, the Children’s Research University (CRU) in Gandhinagar has launched Kidnovation, a first-of-its-kind programme aimed at transforming children’s creative ideas into intellectual property and patents. The ambitious six-month initiative seeks to empower young minds by providing mentorship, technical guidance, and legal support to help convert innovative concepts into patentable inventions.

The Kidnovation programme was officially inaugurated on June 23, coinciding with the 87th death anniversary of renowned educationist Gijubhai Badheka, whose vision of child-centric education continues to inspire educational reforms in Gujarat.

Kidnovation Inspired by National Education Policy 2020

The Kidnovation initiative aligns closely with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and experiential learning. According to Children’s Research University Vice-Chancellor TS Joshi, the programme is designed to identify talented young innovators from schools across Gujarat and provide them with the necessary ecosystem to transform their ideas into real-world innovations.

Speaking about the initiative, Joshi said that Kidnovation will encourage students to think beyond textbooks and become problem-solvers capable of developing practical solutions for everyday challenges. Kidnovation to Support Young Innovators Across Gujarat

One of the major objectives of Kidnovation is to bridge the gap between children’s imagination and innovation. Many creative ideas generated by students often remain unexplored due to the absence of mentorship and technical support. Through this initiative, Children’s Research University aims to create a structured innovation ecosystem where students can receive expert guidance from concept development to patent filing.

Officials stated that Kidnovation will provide students with opportunities to learn design thinking, product development, innovation screening, and prototype creation. Legal experts will also assist students in understanding patent procedures, ensuring that promising ideas receive proper intellectual property protection.

Kidnovation Targets 20-30 Patent Applications

A key highlight of the Kidnovation programme is its goal to facilitate 20 to 30 provisional patent applications with the Indian Patent Office during the first phase of the initiative. Importantly, the ownership of every patent filed under Kidnovation will remain with the child innovators themselves.

The programme will also train nearly 100 selected students from various districts of Gujarat in innovation management, prototype development, and entrepreneurship. These students will participate in specialized workshops led by experts from academia, research institutions, and the innovation ecosystem.

White Paper to Strengthen Innovation Education

Another significant outcome of Kidnovation will be the preparation of a policy-oriented pedagogical white paper. The document will focus on promoting intellectual property awareness among primary school students and recommend strategies for integrating innovation-based learning into school education.

The white paper will be submitted to the Gujarat government’s education department and could serve as a roadmap for expanding similar innovation programmes across the state.

Kidnovation Timeline: June to November 2026

The Kidnovation programme will be implemented in multiple phases between June and November 2026.

Following the official launch, teachers and school coordinators will undergo orientation sessions to understand the objectives and implementation process. During July and August, schools will begin identifying innovative student ideas while mentors will guide children in refining their concepts.

In September, subject experts will conduct prior-art searches to determine the originality of submitted ideas. The most innovative concepts will then move to the prototype development stage.

A major attraction of Kidnovation will be the two-day residential prototyping boot camp scheduled for October 15-16 at the Children’s Research University campus. Coinciding with the birth anniversary of former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the boot camp will bring together around 50 shortlisted students for hands-on innovation workshops, prototype building, and expert mentoring.

The programme will conclude on November 15, the birth anniversary of Gijubhai Badheka, with a grand felicitation ceremony where selected child innovators will receive patent filing certificates and recognition from distinguished guests.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat has been actively promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, and research-driven education. The launch of Kidnovation reflects the state’s commitment to developing future innovators capable of contributing to India’s knowledge economy.
