New Delhi, February 10 :
BJP women MPs on Tuesday backed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and urged him to take strong action against Opposition leaders over an alleged incident during the Parliament Budget Session.
The BJP MPs accused Opposition members of creating chaos in the Lok Sabha, including entering the Well of the House, throwing papers towards the Chair, and allegedly surrounding the Prime Minister’s seat during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address.
BJP MPs Demand “Strongest Possible Action”
In a letter to Speaker Om Birla, BJP women MPs claimed that on February 4, Opposition women MPs allegedly surrounded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seat and later approached the Speaker’s chamber aggressively.
They requested the Speaker to take “the strongest possible action” against the MPs involved.
BJP Calls It a “Dark Moment” in Parliamentary Democracy
The BJP MPs stated that the nation witnessed an “unfortunate and regrettable incident” inside the Lok Sabha, where Opposition members allegedly:
- Entered the Well of the House
- Climbed on tables
- Tore papers
- Threw papers towards the Speaker
The BJP termed the incident as one of the “darkest moments in the history of India’s parliamentary democracy.”
Opposition MPs Allegedly Approached Speaker’s Chamber
The letter further claimed that the matter became more serious when Opposition MPs later approached the Speaker’s chamber.
The BJP MPs said they could hear loud noises coming from inside the chamber and alleged the Opposition behaved aggressively.
Congress Women MPs Also Wrote to Speaker
This development comes after Congress women MPs wrote to Om Birla, alleging that the ruling party forced the Speaker to make “false, baseless, and defamatory” claims against them.
Congress MPs stated that their protest in the House was peaceful and followed parliamentary norms, but they were unfairly targeted.
Speaker Om Birla’s Statement on PM’s Absence
Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said he had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to come to the House to prevent any unpleasant incident.
He claimed he had received information that some Congress MPs could surround the PM’s seat and create an unprecedented situation.
Row Linked to Rahul Gandhi Speech Stalemate
The controversy comes amid a continuing stalemate in the Lok Sabha regarding Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s address during the Motion of Thanks debate.
Congress MPs claimed Rahul Gandhi was denied the opportunity to speak for four consecutive days, while a BJP MP was allowed to make “vulgar and obscene” remarks about former Prime Ministers.
Rahul Gandhi reportedly attempted to cite former Army Chief General MM Naravane’s memoir related to the 2020 India-China standoff.
