New Delhi: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday staged a sit-in protest outside Parliament Street Police Station along with Sahil Lochav, the alleged victim of reported pellet gun injuries during the July 20 student protests in the national capital. The Congress leader demanded immediate registration of a case and sought action over allegations of excessive police force during the demonstration.
The Rahul Gandhi Parliament Protest has intensified the political debate surrounding the alleged use of pellet guns against protesting students. Gandhi, accompanied by Lochav and his legal representatives, approached Delhi Police officials seeking registration of an FIR and accountability over the incident.
According to Congress sources, Sahil Lochav had earlier approached Delhi Police on August 14 along with his lawyers and submitted a written complaint regarding the alleged police action. However, the police allegedly did not provide an acknowledgement or investigation officer (I/O) number for the complaint.
Sources claimed that Lochav again followed up on August 17 through email and phone, but no official acknowledgement was received. Following this, Rahul Gandhi accompanied him to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) office at Parliament Street Police Station to press for action.
Rahul Gandhi Seeks FIR Registration Over Alleged Police Action
During the Rahul Gandhi Parliament Protest, the Opposition leader demanded that the complaint filed by Lochav be formally registered as an FIR. Gandhi argued that the allegations mentioned in the complaint represent a cognisable offence and require a proper investigation.
The complaint reportedly concerns alleged police action against student protesters during the July 20 demonstration in Delhi. It includes allegations of excessive force, including the reported use of pellet guns and other crowd-control measures.
Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly raised concerns over the treatment of protesting students and has demanded justice for those allegedly injured during the demonstration. He has also questioned the role of authorities in handling student protests.
Sahil Lochav’s Complaint and Allegations
The alleged victim, Sahil Lochav, approached the police seeking legal action over injuries reportedly caused during the protest. According to the complaint, the incident requires investigation and accountability from the concerned authorities.
The issue gained political attention after allegations surfaced that students participating in the July 20 protest were subjected to harsh police action. The Congress party has criticised the Delhi Police response and demanded transparency in the matter.
The Rahul Gandhi Parliament Protest has now become a major political flashpoint, with the Opposition demanding answers from the government and law enforcement agencies.
Earlier Meetings With Delhi Police Officials
Before staging the sit-in outside Parliament Street Police Station, Rahul Gandhi reportedly visited Mandir Marg Police Station and requested registration of the case. Sources claimed that after the request was not accepted, Gandhi moved to meet senior police officials.
He later reached the DCP Central office and met police officials regarding the complaint. The Congress leader continued his efforts at Parliament Street Police Station, where he sought details regarding the investigation process.
The Opposition has maintained that registering an FIR is the first step towards ensuring a fair investigation into allegations of police excesses.
Rahul Gandhi’s Previous Claims on Student Protest Action
Earlier on July 29, Rahul Gandhi had addressed a press conference where he alleged that protesting students were attacked with pellet guns and subjected to excessive force.
During the press conference, Gandhi claimed that medical documents from AIIMS indicated pellet injuries suffered by one of the protesters. He also alleged that shock batons and other forceful methods were used against students.
Gandhi questioned the manner in which authorities handled the protest and said that students raising concerns should not face violence or intimidation.
The Congress leader’s statements triggered a political controversy, with opposition parties demanding an inquiry into the alleged incident.
Political Impact of Rahul Gandhi Parliament Protest
The controversy surrounding the alleged pellet gun use has affected proceedings in Parliament. Opposition parties have raised the issue strongly, leading to repeated disruptions during the Monsoon Session.
The Rahul Gandhi Parliament Protest has added further pressure on authorities to address allegations made by the complainant. Congress leaders have demanded accountability and a transparent investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, the issue remains politically sensitive as both the government and opposition continue to debate the allegations and the response of law enforcement agencies.
FIR Demand Remains Central Issue
The primary demand raised during the protest is the registration of an FIR based on Sahil Lochav’s complaint. Rahul Gandhi has argued that denying registration of a case prevents proper investigation and delays justice.
The Congress party has continued to highlight the matter as an example of alleged misuse of authority against students. The party has demanded that the concerned officials examine the complaint and take appropriate legal action.
As the controversy continues, all eyes remain on the response of Delhi Police and further developments regarding the complaint.
The Rahul Gandhi Parliament Protest has emerged as a significant political issue, bringing renewed focus on student protests, police accountability and the demand for legal action over alleged use of force in Delhi.
