New Delhi, February 25, 2026: Foreign policy expert Mahesh Sachdev on Wednesday criticised US President Donald Trump over his repeated claim of stopping an India-Pakistan conflict, stating that the American leader appears “desperate for a foreign policy success.”
Sachdev made the remarks while reacting to Trump’s recent State of the Union Address, where the US President again claimed that his administration prevented a potential conflict between India and Pakistan following tensions after the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack.
Expert Questions Trump’s Claims
During his address, Trump stated that he had “stopped eight wars,” including a possible confrontation between India and Pakistan. However, Sachdev said the timing of these claims reflects political pressure within the United States.
According to the expert, Trump faces declining approval ratings ahead of upcoming US midterm elections. He suggested that the President is highlighting foreign policy achievements to strengthen his political position domestically.
India Rejects Third-Party Mediation
India has consistently denied any external involvement in de-escalating tensions with Pakistan. Indian officials maintained that both countries halted military operations after direct communication between their respective Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMO).
Sachdev noted that the contrasting claims and official denials clearly explain the diplomatic situation surrounding the issue.
Global Challenges Add Pressure
The expert further stated that several unresolved international crises have increased pressure on the US administration. He pointed to limited progress in efforts related to the Ukraine-Russia conflict, stalled negotiations involving Iran, and continuing instability in West Asia.
He argued that the absence of major diplomatic breakthroughs has pushed Trump to project stronger foreign policy achievements.
Political Context of State of the Union Address
Sachdev added that the State of the Union Address carries significant political importance, especially during a turbulent period marked by geopolitical tensions, economic challenges, and approaching elections in the United States.
He also highlighted recent policy challenges and legal setbacks faced by the US administration, which have intensified political debate within the country.
