New Delhi, February 25, 2026: Maruti Suzuki India Limited has achieved a global sustainability milestone after its in-plant railway siding in Gujarat became the world’s first modal shift transportation project to generate carbon credits under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) programme.
The company announced that the project received registration under the global carbon credit framework managed by Verra, a leading voluntary carbon credit registry.
Shift from Road to Rail Reduces Emissions
The initiative focuses on transporting vehicles through rail instead of road logistics. Rail transport produces significantly lower emissions, making it a more sustainable alternative.
According to the company, the project will reduce nearly 1.7 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions over a 10-year crediting period beginning from FY 2023-24.
After independent verification of emission savings, Verra will issue approximately 1.7 lakh carbon credits to Maruti Suzuki.
Global Benchmark in Sustainable Logistics
Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the recognition sets a new global benchmark for environmentally responsible logistics operations.
He stated that shifting automobile dispatch from road to rail has reduced fuel consumption, eased highway congestion, and lowered the overall carbon footprint of vehicle transportation.
The emission reductions were calculated using the AM0090 methodology approved under the United Nations climate framework.
Part of India’s Green Mobility Push
Operations at the Gujarat railway siding began in March 2023. Since then, Maruti Suzuki has dispatched more than six lakh vehicles through the facility located in Hansalpur.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the facility in March 2024 under the GatiShakti infrastructure programme aimed at improving multimodal connectivity across India.
Following its success, the company also launched a larger in-plant railway siding at its Manesar facility in 2025.
Contribution to UN Sustainable Development Goals
Maruti Suzuki stated that the project supports key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action, economic growth, and public well-being.
The initiative highlights how industrial efficiency and environmental sustainability can work together while supporting India’s long-term net-zero emission targets.
