India’s Food Grain Stocks Remain Strong
The Government of India has confirmed that the country currently holds food grain stocks nearly three times higher than the prescribed buffer norms, ensuring strong food security.
Speaking at a press briefing, C Shikha, Joint Secretary in the Department of Food and Public Distribution, stated that India has sufficient reserves to meet both routine and emergency requirements.
Wheat and Rice Stocks at Comfortable Levels
According to official data:
- Wheat stock stands at 222 lakh metric tonnes (LMT)
- Rice stock is approximately 380 LMT
This brings the total food grain stock to around 602 LMT, which is more than adequate to meet the needs of the Public Distribution System (PDS) and any unforeseen demand.
As a result, the government remains confident about maintaining uninterrupted food supply across the country.
Stable Imports and Domestic Production Boost Supply
In addition to domestic stock, imports from key countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, Ukraine, Argentina, and Brazil have remained steady.
Moreover, improved mustard production has strengthened domestic availability, especially in the edible oil segment.
Therefore, the overall supply situation in India remains stable and well-managed.
Government Monitoring Situation Closely
Officials stated that the government continues to closely monitor supply and demand trends. If required, authorities are prepared to intervene to maintain stability in food availability and prices.
Maritime Operations and Seafarer Safety
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed that Indian maritime operations remain stable despite tensions in West Asia.
- 16 Indian-flagged vessels are currently operating in the Persian Gulf
- Around 433 Indian seafarers are onboard
- Over 964 seafarers have already been repatriated
Additionally, vessels such as Green Sanghvi and Green Asha have safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring continued supply movement.
Large-Scale Repatriation Efforts Continue
The government also confirmed that nearly 5.98 lakh passengers have returned to India amid the evolving situation in West Asia and the Gulf region.
This highlights India’s proactive approach in ensuring citizen safety and maintaining essential supply chains.
Overall, India’s strong food grain reserves, stable imports, and efficient logistics systems have ensured food security despite global uncertainties. With continuous monitoring and preparedness, the government remains well-equipped to handle any future challenges.
