Gandhinagar | Gujarat, June 29 (ANI): Gujarat’s flagship water conservation initiative, the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan, has significantly transformed the state’s water management landscape, recording a massive increase of 1,38,039 lakh cubic feet in water storage capacity over the past eight years. The initiative, implemented under the broader “Catch the Rain” campaign, has evolved into a large-scale people’s movement focused on water conservation, groundwater recharge, and sustainable resource management.
The state government has credited the success of the initiative to coordinated efforts across departments, strong public participation, and continuous focus on rejuvenating traditional water bodies. Officials stated that the campaign has not only strengthened water security but also generated substantial rural employment opportunities.
Massive Growth in Water Storage Capacity
According to the Water Resources Department, the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan has delivered remarkable results in improving Gujarat’s water retention systems. In the current year alone, the state recorded an increase of 20,789 lakh cubic feet in storage capacity. Over the last eight years, the cumulative improvement has reached 1,38,039 lakh cubic feet.
This expansion has been achieved through desilting of lakes, restoration of check dams, cleaning of canals, and revival of drainage systems across both rural and urban regions. Officials emphasized that these efforts are crucial in a water-stressed state like Gujarat, where efficient water management directly impacts agriculture, drinking water availability, and ecological balance.
The Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan has been implemented with a long-term vision of ensuring sustainable water conservation practices while encouraging citizens to actively participate in resource protection.
Large-Scale Water Conservation Works Across Gujarat
The Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan has successfully completed over 1,23,635 water conservation projects in the last eight years. These include:
- 39,770 lake deepening and new lake construction works
- 26,873 check dam desilting projects
- 7,810 check dam repair works
- Cleaning of 80,793 km of canals and drainage channels
In the current phase alone, the campaign carried out 2,450 lake deepening works, 3,661 check dam desilting projects, and 1,160 check dam repair works. Additionally, 626 km of canals and 1,277 km of drainage systems were cleaned to ensure better water flow and storage efficiency.
Officials noted that such large-scale infrastructure restoration has significantly improved groundwater recharge and reduced water scarcity in several districts.
Employment Generation Through Water Conservation
One of the key achievements of the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan is its contribution to rural employment. The initiative has generated over 2.30 lakh man-days of employment in the current year alone, while the cumulative employment created over eight years exceeds 206.73 lakh man-days.
The integration of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) with the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan has ensured that water conservation works also serve as a livelihood source for rural communities. Workers engaged in desilting, excavation, and restoration activities have benefited directly from the program.
Officials highlighted that this dual impact—environmental sustainability and employment generation—has made the campaign a model for other states.
Multi-Department Coordination for Better Results
The success of the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan is attributed to coordinated efforts between six major departments:
- Water Resources and Water Supply Department
- Forest and Environment Department
- Urban Development Department
- Rural Development Department
- Agriculture Department
- Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd
This multi-agency collaboration ensures efficient planning, execution, and monitoring of water conservation projects across the state.
The campaign is implemented through three primary channels: public participation, MGNREGA schemes, and departmental execution. This integrated approach has helped scale up operations while maintaining quality and accountability.
Revival of Traditional Water Bodies
A key focus of the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan has been the revival of traditional water systems, including village ponds, lakes, and stepwells. These water bodies play a critical role in groundwater recharge and maintaining ecological balance.
By desilting and restoring these structures, the campaign has significantly improved rainwater harvesting capacity. Many villages have reported improved water availability even during dry seasons due to enhanced storage infrastructure.
Officials stressed that restoring traditional water systems is essential for long-term water security, especially in semi-arid regions of Gujarat.
Launch and Expansion of the 2026 Phase
The current phase of the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan was launched by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar on February 23, 2026. Since its launch, thousands of water conservation works have been completed across the state.
Minister of State for Water Resources Ishwarsinh Thakorbhai Patel stated that this year alone, 13,315 water conservation works have been successfully completed through coordinated departmental efforts.
He emphasized that the initiative has transformed into a “people’s movement,” with active participation from local communities, NGOs, and rural institutions.
Environmental and Agricultural Impact
The Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan has had a direct impact on Gujarat’s agriculture sector. Improved water storage and groundwater recharge have enhanced irrigation capacity, benefiting farmers across multiple districts.
Increased water availability has also helped reduce dependency on erratic monsoon patterns, ensuring more stable crop production cycles. Farmers have reported improved soil moisture levels and better yield consistency due to sustained water availability.
Environmental experts also highlight that the program has contributed to biodiversity conservation by restoring wetlands and natural habitats.
Strengthening Long-Term Water Security
The long-term objective of the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan is to build a resilient water ecosystem that can withstand climate variability and increasing demand. With urbanization and industrial growth placing additional pressure on water resources, such initiatives are considered critical for sustainable development.
Officials reaffirmed that continued investment in water conservation infrastructure will remain a top priority for the state government.
The Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan has emerged as one of Gujarat’s most impactful environmental initiatives, significantly improving water storage capacity, strengthening groundwater levels, and generating large-scale rural employment.
With a cumulative increase of 1,38,039 lakh cubic feet in water storage capacity over eight years, the program stands as a strong example of how coordinated governance, public participation, and sustainable planning can transform natural resource management.
As Gujarat continues to expand the initiative, the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan is expected to play a crucial role in securing the state’s water future and ensuring long-term ecological balance.
