India strengthened their position in the Galle Test despite Sri Lanka’s continued fightback during the first session of Day 4 on Tuesday.
India reached 116/4 at lunch, extending their overall lead to 294 runs, with Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 21 and Dhruv Jurel on 5.
The visitors had already established a commanding position after scoring 462 in their first innings and bowling Sri Lanka out for 284. India therefore carried a first-innings advantage of 178 runs into their second innings.
Despite losing four wickets during the opening session, India remained firmly in control of the Galle Test.
5 Key Highlights From the Galle Test
1. India Build a 294-Run Lead
The most significant development in the Galle Test was India’s growing overall lead.
After Sri Lanka were dismissed for 284 in their first innings, India began their second innings with a 178-run advantage.
By lunch on Day 4, the visitors had added another 116 runs to their total, taking their overall lead to 294.
India’s strong position gives the team considerable flexibility as the Test progresses. The visitors can look to add more runs before deciding when to put Sri Lanka back into bat.
The substantial lead has put India in a commanding position in the Galle Test, although Sri Lanka’s bowlers have continued to make regular breakthroughs.
2. Yashasvi Jaiswal Falls for a Duck
India’s second innings began in difficult fashion.
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for a three-ball duck by Asitha Fernando in the first over.
Jaiswal edged the delivery behind the wicket, where Niroshan Dickwella completed the catch.
India were immediately reduced to 0/1, giving Sri Lanka an early boost in the Galle Test.
However, the early setback did not prevent India from rebuilding their innings.
3. KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal Add 65 Runs
After Jaiswal’s early dismissal, KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal steadied the Indian innings.
The pair put together a valuable 65-run partnership, helping India recover from the early setback.
Padikkal looked comfortable against the pace attack and found several boundaries, while Rahul showed attacking intent against Sri Lanka’s spinners.
Rahul also struck sixes against Keshara Nuwantha and Prabath Jayasuriya as India moved past the 50-run mark.
The partnership provided important stability during a crucial phase of the Galle Test.
However, Sri Lanka eventually broke through when Prabath Jayasuriya dismissed Rahul for 35.
4. Prabath Jayasuriya Strikes Twice
Sri Lanka’s spin attack continued to create problems for India during the opening session.
Prabath Jayasuriya was particularly effective, claiming two important wickets.
He first dismissed KL Rahul for 35, ending the 65-run partnership.
Jayasuriya then removed India captain Shubman Gill for just 8, reducing India to 81/3.
His double strike gave Sri Lanka renewed confidence and kept the hosts in the contest despite India’s large overall advantage.
Jayasuriya finished the session with figures of 2/42, making him one of Sri Lanka’s most effective bowlers in the Galle Test.
5. Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel Hold Firm
After India lost Gill and Padikkal, Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel came together to see out the remainder of the first session.
Pant played aggressively and helped India reach the 100-run mark in 25.5 overs.
He struck a boundary against Keshara Nuwantha to take India past the milestone.
Padikkal was then dismissed for 44 from 75 deliveries, with six fours, after being trapped LBW by Nuwantha.
India slipped to 111/4, but Pant and Jurel ensured there were no further wickets before lunch.
Pant remained unbeaten on 21 while Jurel was not out on 5 at the interval.
Their partnership will be important as India look to increase their lead further in the Galle Test.
India Dominated the First Innings
India’s strong position in the Galle Test was built on an impressive first innings total of 462.
The visitors produced several major batting performances before Sri Lanka’s spinners fought back.
Devdutt Padikkal was the standout performer, scoring a magnificent 167.
His innings provided the foundation for India’s huge first-innings total.
Rishabh Pant also contributed 39, while Dhruv Jurel made a valuable 51.
KL Rahul scored 82 after returning to the crease following a brief retirement due to cramps.
India eventually finished their first innings at 462, giving Sri Lanka a major challenge.
Sri Lanka Respond With Sonal Dinusha Century
Sri Lanka showed considerable resistance in their first innings.
Despite losing wickets regularly, Sonal Dinusha produced a memorable performance by scoring his maiden Test century.
Dinusha’s hundred provided Sri Lanka with much-needed stability after the hosts found themselves in trouble against India’s bowling attack.
He formed a crucial 146-run sixth-wicket partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella.
Dickwella also played an important innings, scoring 80.
The partnership temporarily shifted momentum towards Sri Lanka and prevented India from wrapping up the innings quickly.
However, India’s bowlers eventually regained control.
Suthar and Jadeja Lead India’s Bowling Attack
Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja were central to India’s dominance with the ball.
Suthar produced an impressive debut performance, claiming 4/76.
Jadeja supported him with 3/57, as India’s left-arm spin combination caused major problems for the Sri Lankan batting lineup.
Prasidh Krishna also dismissed Dickwella for 80, breaking the important partnership with Dinusha.
Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 284.
That left India with a significant 178-run first-innings lead in the Galle Test.
Sri Lanka Continue to Fight Back
Despite India’s commanding advantage, Sri Lanka have refused to surrender.
Their bowlers have regularly taken wickets during India’s second innings.
Asitha Fernando’s early dismissal of Jaiswal gave Sri Lanka an ideal start.
Jayasuriya then removed Rahul and Gill, while Keshara Nuwantha dismissed Padikkal.
The consistent wickets have prevented India from completely dominating the second innings.
However, India’s large first-innings lead means Sri Lanka still face a difficult task in the Galle Test.
India Face an Important Decision
India’s next challenge will be deciding how many more runs they need before declaring or setting Sri Lanka a target.
With a lead approaching 300 runs at lunch, India have already created significant pressure on the hosts.
The visitors will need to balance two objectives: building a target that is difficult enough to defend while leaving sufficient time to take 10 Sri Lankan wickets.
The decision could become one of the most important tactical moments of the Galle Test.
Sri Lanka Need a Major Batting Performance
If India eventually declare or are bowled out, Sri Lanka will face the challenge of chasing a substantial fourth-innings target.
The hosts have already shown through Dinusha and Dickwella that their batting lineup can resist India’s bowlers.
However, India’s spinners have also demonstrated that the Galle surface can provide assistance to slow bowlers.
Suthar’s four wickets and Jadeja’s three-wicket haul in the first innings will give India confidence heading into the final stages of the Galle Test.
